Shreveport, Louisiana, is set to light up with joy and remembrance as the inaugural 318 MLK DreamFest kicks off this January. This exciting series of events is designed to celebrate the incredible legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and acknowledge his significant connection to Shreveport. Folks in the community are invited to join in the fun and festivities that run from January 15 through February 17, 2025, culminating in a spectacular parade.
The DreamFest is not just a single-day affair; it’s a multi-faceted celebration packed with activities that will surely delight attendees of all ages. Imagine days filled with parties, parades, tours, and educational activities that celebrate civil rights history right here in North Louisiana. Local organization, Visit Shreveport Bossier, is teaming up with the Dream Keepers Alliance and other local partners to bring this vibrant event to life. Mark your calendars because this is an event you won’t want to miss!
2025 marks the 96th birthday of Dr. King, and in his honor, the DreamFest will highlight numerous activities that recognize MLK scholars and the MLK School of the Year. Students from Caddo Parish will be encouraged to participate, with awards set aside for the top five schools boasting over 50 attendees. It’s a fun and educational way to get young people involved and honor a figure who fought tirelessly for equality.
The Krewe of Harambee will be leading the charge with a grand parade celebrating both Dr. King’s impactful legacy and the joyous spirit of Mardi Gras. Residents can join in the excitement with the Krewe of Sobek, kicking off their signature Mardi Gras festivities with Grande Bal XXII featuring an array of vibrant entertainment. Don’t miss the Krewe of Sobek Parade too, happening at the Louisiana State Fairgrounds at 1 PM on January 18, 2025.
On January 20, the Mystic Krewe of Imani will be organizing an MLK Day Resource Fair, providing free food, clothing, health screenings, and entertainment from noon to 5 PM. It will be a fantastic way for community members to come together and support one another. Additionally, the Shreveport-Bossier African American Chamber of Commerce will present the film “Beyond Galilee,” a compelling exploration of the Civil Rights Movement in Shreveport, on the same day.
For history enthusiasts, Black History Bus Tours will be available to showcase significant sites related to the Civil Rights Movement, departing right from the SporTran Bus Terminal. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the area’s rich history while honoring Dr. King’s dream.
Centenary College will also play a role during the annual Dream Week from January 20-24, focusing on themes of freedom, justice, and unity with various events. On January 23, an MLK: Art & Activism Exhibit will open, giving local and regional artists the chance to celebrate civil rights through their work.
The 2nd Annual Bridge Builders Breakfast on January 25 will honor leaders who are actively promoting Dr. King’s vision of equality and justice. Plus, the Krewe of Harambee is also excited to announce they will provide scholarships for high school graduates from single-parent homes, underlining their commitment to uplifting the community.
As the DreamFest comes to a close, all eyes will be on the 25th Annual MLK Parade in Downtown Shreveport on February 17. This parade will feature remarkable floats, lively marching bands, and an overwhelming sense of community spirit. It’s the perfect way to cap off a month filled with celebration, learning, and unity.
