Shreveport Hosts 3rd Annual Cancer Survivorship Walkathon, Raising Over $15,000 for Wellness & Integrative Medicine Program

Shreveport Hosts 3rd Annual Cancer Survivorship Walkathon

SHREVEPORT, La. – LSU Health Shreveport saw an outpouring of support for cancer survivors during the 3rd Annual Cancer Survivorship Walkathon held on Saturday in collaboration with the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center. The event was a culmination of efforts by LSU Health Shreveport students and the community to celebrate survivorship and raise funds for a worthy cause.

Inspiration from a Medical Student

The vision for the walkathon stemmed from medical student Tanner Ward, whose personal experience with cancer inspired him to create a platform for survivors to come together, foster healthy habits, and connect with peers, medical professionals, and loved ones. Ward’s dedication to supporting survivors led to the establishment of Survivor Saturdays, where survivors participated in weekly walking groups at Betty Virginia Park leading up to the walkathon.

A Show of Support

The walkathon drew survivors from across the region, highlighting the strength and resilience of those who have faced cancer. Over 150 supporters, including Fairfield Elementary Magnet cheerleaders, rallied together to show their solidarity and raise awareness about the challenges faced by survivors.

Raising Funds for a Good Cause

One of the significant achievements of the event was raising more than $15,000 to support the Wellness & Integrative Medicine Program at Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport – Feist-Weiller Cancer Center. This program plays a vital role in providing comprehensive support for survivors as they navigate the transition from treatment to a healthy lifestyle post-cancer.

Empowering Survivors

The Wellness & Integrative Medicine Program offers resources focused on mind, menu, and movement to help survivors improve their overall well-being and quality of life. By empowering survivors with the tools and support they need, LSU Health Shreveport is making a meaningful impact on the lives of those affected by cancer.

Celebrating Resilience and Hope

The 3rd Annual Cancer Survivorship Walkathon was not just a fundraising event but a celebration of resilience, hope, and the remarkable spirit of cancer survivors. It served as a reminder that together, we can make a difference in the lives of those who have overcome tremendous obstacles.

As the community comes together to support and uplift cancer survivors, events like the walkathon are a testament to the power of unity and compassion in the face of adversity. LSU Health Shreveport’s commitment to survivorship and holistic care continues to inspire and drive positive change in the fight against cancer.
