Shreveport, Louisiana – The community is mourning the loss of Sr. Lucy Scallan, who quietly passed away on February 2, 2025, at the impressive age of 99. Sr. Lucy was the last surviving member of the Congregation of the Daughters of the Cross, affectionately known as the St. Vincent’s Sisters. She spent her final days at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Nursing Home, where her spirit continued to inspire everyone around her.
A Lifelong Journey of Faith and Service
Born on July 28, 1925, in Mansura, Louisiana, Sr. Lucy was the youngest of eleven children. Her family’s journey took them to Shreveport in 1926 and eventually to New Orleans, where she graduated from Dominican High School in 1943. The seeds of her faith and devotion were sown early, leading her to enter the convent on September 9, 1944. By June 16, 1949, she had made her vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, marking the beginning of a life dedicated to serving others.
Education and Music
Sr. Lucy’s academic journey was nothing short of impressive. She earned her undergraduate degree from Mount St. Scholastica, a Master’s in Education from St. Louis University, and a music certification from Centenary College in Shreveport. With her educational background, she taught elementary school students across various Louisiana communities, including Mansura, Moreauville, Marksville, Lake Providence, and Monroe.
In the Shreveport-Bossier area, Sr. Lucy shared her passion for learning at St. Catherine, St. Theresa, St. John Berchman, and Christ the King Schools, in addition to St. Vincent’s Academy. Her love for music was evident as she not only taught it but also gave piano lessons and served as both an organist and sacristan. Moreover, she donned the hat of chauffeur for her fellow sisters, showcasing her dedication and commitment to the community.
A Heart for Service
Beyond the classroom, Sr. Lucy’s heart beat fiercely for those in need. She contributed her time and talents at Christian Services in Shreveport, where she provided food, clothing, transportation, and nursing services to those less fortunate. Her compassion extended to teaching Vacation Bible School across several towns, including Homer, Winnsboro, Shreveport, Bossier City, Hodge, Minden, and Mansfield.
It was her daily prayers for others and her zest for life that endeared her to many. Sr. Lucy loved music, relished New Orleans cuisine, and enjoyed the simple pleasure of long walks. Her joyful spirit left an indelible mark on everyone she met.
Remembering a Remarkable Life
Sr. Lucy was preceded in death by her parents, Valborn and Irma Laborde Scallan, along with her ten siblings, many of whom were also involved in religious service. Though she is no longer with us, she leaves behind a legacy that includes numerous nieces and nephews, fellow sisters and priests from the Diocese of Shreveport, and countless former students and friends who loved her dearly.
Final Farewell
Visitation for Sr. Lucy is set for February 6, 2025, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. John Berchmans. Following the visitation, the Rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will take place the next day, February 7, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the same cathedral, culminating with entombment at Forest Park Mausoleum on St. Vincent Avenue in Shreveport.
In honor of Sr. Lucy’s tireless dedication to education and service, donations may be made to the Diocese of Shreveport/Daughters of the Cross Educational Fund. Though she may be gone, Sr. Lucy’s enduring faith and love will continue to live in the hearts of many.
