Shreveport Says Goodbye to a Beloved Leader: Larry Ferdinand Passes Away at 77

In a sad turn of events, the city of Shreveport has lost one of its most cherished leaders, Larry Ferdinand Sr., who passed away on February 25, 2023, at the age of 77. Ferdinad’s legacy is rich, engraved in the hearts of many who knew him or were touched by his dedication to the community.

A Celebration of Life Awaited

People from all walks of life are coming together to honor Ferdinand over the weekend with a series of services designed to celebrate his vibrant life and contributions. Visitation will be held at the Winnfield Funeral Home in Shreveport on Friday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. If you wish to pay your respects and share fond memories, this is the perfect opportunity. Then, on Saturday at noon, a heartfelt celebration of his life is scheduled at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will follow at 1 p.m. at Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery, allowing friends and family to provide a final goodbye.

A Life of Service

Ferdinand, affectionately known by his nicknames—including Hickey, Tip, and Big Larry—was no stranger to hard work. His journey on the Shreveport City Council spanned six and a half years from 1984 to 1990. He also held the role of Director of Community Development for four and a half years, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to improving the quality of life for residents.

A Remarkable Education and Career

Born in 1947 in Chenal, Louisiana—not too far from Baton Rouge—Ferdinand was always destined for greatness. He graduated as the valedictorian of the Class of 1965 at Cohn High School in Port Allen before joining one of the first integrated classes at Louisiana State University. He later transferred to Southern University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 1969. Ferdinand also held a significant role on Southern University’s Board of Supervisors, showing his loyalty to education and upliftment.

Ferdinand enjoyed a fruitful career of 27 years at AT&T, where he broke barriers as one of the first Black managers there. He also served in the U.S. Army, emphasizing his dedication to serving the nation. After his tenure with AT&T, he founded Larry Ferdinand & Associates Realty Company, which flourished for over 40 years, underscoring his passion for real estate and community empowerment. Throughout his years, he championed causes like equality, education, and economic development, which remain vital in today’s society.

A Legacy of Advocacy

Not just a man of service, Ferdinand also stepped into political arenas as an alternate delegate at the 2004 Democratic National Convention and received invitations to the White House during the Obama Administration. Although he ran for a seat in the Louisiana House of Representatives without success, his spirit remained unbroken as he continued to serve his community. He held the position of President of the Shreveport NAACP and actively participated in the League of Women Voters, always advocating for justice and a more equitable society.

A Man of Integrity and Faith

Throughout his life, Ferdinand was unwavering in his integrity, faith, and commitment to lifelong learning. With his heart in community empowerment and a deep belief in the power of homeownership, he tirelessly worked to ensure African American voices were heard in decision-making processes. Ferdinand’s influence is commemorated and cherished by those he leaves behind.

A Community in Mourning

The people of Shreveport will forever value Ferdinand’s legacy of service and leadership. As tributes pour in and fond memories are shared, it is clear that a great light has dimmed in the community. However, his spirit will live on through the countless lives he affected positively throughout his remarkable journey.
