Grambling’s Mickey Joseph meets and greets Tiger faithful in Shreveport
SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) – New Grambling Head Football Coach, Mickey Joseph received quite the heroes welcome for his meet and greet inside Shreveport’s Louisiana Daiquiri Cafe. He instantly became the man of the hour once he announced the addition of 30 new players to his roster for the Spring.
“We used the portal, and some of the kids are high school kids,” says Joseph. “It’s plug and play. We don’t go into the portal to get kids to be backups. We go into the portal to get starters. We’re going to continue to develop our high school kids.”
Quarterbacks Development and Strategy
Coach Joseph stated the positive development of the quarterback room, which appears to be a two-headed race between redshirt senior, and last year’s starter Myles Crawley and junior Julian Calvez. “Myles is making better decisions,” Joesph says. “He had one day when he was down, didn’t make very good decisions. My two things with the quarterback are, making good decisions and taking care of the football. Last scrimmage, he did that. Julian he can beat you with his feet. I want Julian with the first, second read, I want Julian to take off, and I want him to run.”
Penalties Correction Plan
Penalties have hurt the Tigers in the last two seasons, costing the G-men nearly 2,000 yards. “The non-moving penalties, they know we’re not going to put up with that,” says Joseph. “Now, a holding call? We’re going to explain to them, ‘You’ve got to move your feet. Look where your body is.’ Pass interference? ‘You can’t stop him. You got to give him room to make a cut.’”
Coaching Style and Player Expectations
The process of bringing Grambling its first winning season since 2019 comes with stipulations. “Let them know, ‘It’s going to be my way,’” says Joseph. “They do have an open mind where they can come to my office and explain to me if they don’t like it, the way I want to do things. But, I always tell them like this, ‘I’m your coach. I’m not your friend. So, you’re going to have to take the corrections, take me coaching you, without getting into your feelings.”
