BPCC Takes Gold at SkillsUSA; Nationals to be Held in Atlanta
SHREVEPORT, Louisiana – Students from Bossier Parish Community Colleges (BPCC) will be competing in National SkillsUSA this summer. On April 16, students who participated in SkillsUSA Louisiana Postsecondary were tasked with creating a 3-minute newscast from a selection of ten news stories.
The contestants were given two hours to assemble scripts, complete their rundowns, and print a copy for their team and judges. The teams then presented their newscast to the judges using the switcher headsets and wired and wireless mics.
Ten Gold Medals and Advancement to Nationals
“It gives all the students the opportunity to basically demonstrate the skills that they learned during their classes or their time during schooling,” said Emily Huntsberger, the BPCC Skills USA technical leader. “They are competing against others in the state first, and if they score well, they’ll go on to nationals. So, they’re really setting to see how they add up amongst their peers and seeing if they really know what they learned and if they love it or not.”
Ten gold medals were obtained, and BPCC will advance to National SkillsUSA in June. Last April, BPCC won eighteen gold, seven silver, and ten bronze medals at the postsecondary competition in Alexandria, Louisiana. They then competed at the National SkillsUSA competition in June and won two silver and nine bronze medals.
Laying the Foundation for Success
This achievement not only showcases the talent and hard work of the students at BPCC but also signifies the dedication and guidance provided by the faculty and staff. The preparation and skills honed during such competitions lay a strong foundation for these students’ future endeavors in the field of news broadcasting.
