Shreveport’s StorytellHERS Event Returns to Showcase Female Filmmakers
Shreveport filmmaker and curator Kristi Woodard is thrilled that her brainchild, StorytellHERS event, is making a comeback for the third time at the Robinson Film Center on April 25. What started as a mere idea has now turned into an eagerly anticipated annual event.
A Platform for Women Filmmakers
Woodard established the event with the aim of providing female filmmakers with a platform to exhibit their work. Despite some progress, women still remain a minority in the film industry, particularly when it comes to holding the director’s chair, accounting for less than 10% of industry-wide directors.
Inspiring Female Voices
Woodard expressed her growing excitement each year as she witnesses the exceptional talent and creativity of the female filmmakers featured in the event. “Each year I’m more excited and inspired by the women we showcase,” Woodard mentioned.
Telling Women’s Stories
Shreveport filmmaker Jaya McSharma, whose films have been part of all three StorytellHERS events, emphasized the importance of women narrating their own stories. “If we don’t tell our stories, who will?” McSharma questioned, highlighting the need for authentic representation in storytelling.
A Safe Space for Filmmakers
Last year’s event drew a full house, providing an opportunity for attendees to engage in a question-and-answer session with the filmmakers. Woodard emphasized the significance of creating a safe space within the film community where female filmmakers can find support and inspiration from like-minded individuals.
Exciting Lineup for 2024
The 2024 edition of StorytellHERS will feature short films by five talented directors:
- Lara Hill – ‘How Do I Tell You This?’
- Emma Francis – ‘Daffodils in December’
- Erin Bennett Broussard – ‘Spooky Crew’
- Kaitlyn Brown – ‘Off Sides’
- Jaya McSharma – ‘Pink Suit Black Suit’
