Shreveport Students Delve into Impact of Social Media for Scholarship Awards
Shreveport, Louisiana – June 1, 2024
Northwest Louisiana students are exploring the effects of social media in a bid to secure scholarships for their higher education. The 36th Shreveport-Bossier-DeSoto African American Scholarship Awards Committee will be presenting its annual ESSAY Scholarship Award on June 1st at 1 p.m. The event will take place at the Shreve Memorial Library, Walette Branch, located at 362 Hearne Avenue in Shreveport.
The Essay Prompt
High school graduates from the region were tasked with reflecting on the question, “Does Social Media Do More Harm Than Good?” Each student had to craft a 300-word, double-spaced essay on this topic. During the award ceremony, these students will have the opportunity to share their thoughts and perspectives on the impact of social media in today’s society.
Scholarship Opportunities
More than 20 scholarships will be awarded to deserving students who have graduated from high schools in northwest Louisiana. These scholarships will enable the recipients to pursue their higher education goals at the college or university of their choice. By addressing the theme of social media in their essays, students are not only competing for financial assistance but also engaging in critical discussions about the role of technology in shaping our lives.
As social media continues to play a significant role in how we communicate, connect, and consume information, it is essential for young individuals to reflect on its positive and negative implications. The scholarship awards encourage students to think critically about the impact of social media on mental health, relationships, self-image, and society as a whole.
Empowering the Next Generation
By participating in the essay competition, students are not only demonstrating their academic capabilities but also showcasing their ability to think analytically and express their ideas effectively. The scholarship awards aim to empower the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and changemakers by supporting their educational pursuits and nurturing their intellectual curiosity.
A Platform for Dialogue
Events like the ESSAY Scholarship Award ceremony provide a platform for students to engage with pressing issues, such as the impact of social media, in a structured and supportive environment. By sharing their perspectives through writing and discussion, students gain valuable insights and perspectives that can shape their understanding of the world around them.
As the recipients of these scholarships embark on their academic journeys, they will carry with them a deeper understanding of the role that social media plays in shaping our society. By addressing this complex and nuanced topic, students are not only honing their writing and critical thinking skills but also preparing themselves to navigate the digital landscape with awareness, empathy, and resilience.
The 36th Shreveport-Bossier-DeSoto African American Scholarship Awards Committee is proud to recognize the achievements of these students and support them in their pursuit of higher education.
