Project GEAUX Bags Expands to East Texas to Support Children in Crisis

TYLER, Texas – After more than eleven years of operation in Louisiana, Project GEAUX Bags is bringing its mission to East Texas. The initiative aims to provide comfort and essential items to children facing scary situations.

A Mission Born from Personal Experience

The program’s founder, K.C. Kilpatrick, began her journey in 2013 after witnessing the trauma faced by children in emergency situations. She shared her story with sheriffs from East Texas and Louisiana, describing a moment when two frightened children came to her for help. “I started this from the back of my car… because there was a meth pipe in a Winn-Dixie bag upon their arrival,” Kilpatrick recalled. “And I knew that I wanted to do something.”

Support from Local Law Enforcement

Harrison County Sheriff BJ Fletcher became the first sheriff in East Texas to implement the GEAUX Bags program in June. He emphasized the importance of these bags, stating that they help law enforcement form connections with children in need. “It gives them a small will of hope that things are going to get better. It’s the first step in changing their life,” Sheriff Fletcher shared.

What’s Inside a GEAUX Bag?

Each GEAUX Bag is equipped with essential items to support a child during an emergency. The bag includes:

  • Pillow
  • Blanket
  • Backpack
  • Toiletries
  • Pajamas
  • Water and snacks
  • A note of encouragement from peers

Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith describes the bags as a “kit to rescue a kid,” highlighting the need for nurturing during distressing times.

Growth and Expansion Plans

Since launching in East Texas, Project GEAUX Bags has already assisted over 500 children. Sheriff Fletcher expressed his pride in the initiative and his hope for its expansion, stating, “I’m more proud of my colleagues for seeing what we’ve got… Hopefully, we’re going to get it in all 254 counties in Texas.”

Currently, the program operates in four counties and aims to reach 20 counties across East Texas. The impact of Project GEAUX Bags is becoming more significant, and the need for this type of support continues to grow.
