Shreveport Comes Together for Breast Cancer Awareness Event
Shreveport, Louisiana recently transformed into a sea of pink as dozens of residents gathered for the 4th annual Breast Cancer Awareness Event on Saturday evening, September 21. Dressed in various shades of pink, participants filled the venue with love and support, uniting to raise awareness about breast cancer and to honor both survivors and those who have lost their battles with this devastating disease.
Honoring Heroes
The atmosphere was filled with hope and remembrance as attendees shared stories, enjoyed tasty tea and lunch, and listened intently to powerful testimonies from breast cancer survivors. “We are honoring those who lost their lives from this devastating disease, and we are encouraging those and honoring the survivors,” expressed the event’s keynote speaker, Joni Claville, underscoring the event’s dual purpose of honoring memories while uplifting the living.
A Personal Mission
Event organizer Vernita Armstrong shared her personal connection to the cause, saying, “It’s in honor of my grandmother, who died of breast cancer back in 1975, at a time when there was not a lot of information on breast cancer.” She expressed that the lack of awareness and resources available during that time might have altered her grandmother’s fate. Now, through events like this, she feels hopeful that by spreading vital information, many could be saved from a similar fate.
Highlighting Disparities
Joni Claville spoke candidly about the unique challenges faced by women of color in the fight against breast cancer. “Unfortunately, as we celebrate those things, black women still have an uphill battle,” she noted, highlighting that black women are 40 percent more likely to die from this disease than their counterparts. Claville emphasized the necessity of both education and community support, saying that the event radiated optimism and encouragement. The importance of sharing knowledge and personal stories became the cornerstone of the gathering, with many participants brewing new friendships and shared connections.
Awareness Efforts
With October around the corner, marking the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the significance of such events is magnified. Organizers expressed how crucial it is to maintain conversations about breast cancer and early detection not just during October but throughout the entire year. They are committed to keeping the dialogue alive, to ensure no one feels alone in this fight.
Plans for Next Year
The enthusiasm for the event was palpable, and organizers plan on hosting it again next year. The community’s support, alongside a sense of empathy toward those affected, sets a hopeful tone for future gatherings. Discussions about potential improvements and ways to further engage the community will certainly shape an even more memorable event in the years ahead.
A Journey of Hope
As the evening concluded, many left with full hearts and renewed hope. The powerful stories of survival and the emotional tributes made for a memorable experience. Shreveport’s commitment to honoring those affected by breast cancer, while pushing for more awareness and early detection, resonated with everyone who attended. It was a reminder that together as a community, we can truly stand strong against this disease.
As Shreveport looks forward to next year’s event, the sense of unity, support, and encouragement will surely play a vital role, as they continue to shine a light on breast cancer awareness for years to come.
