Celebrating Diversity: Christ the King Catholic Church in Bossier City

It’s home to the largest number of Spanish-speaking parishioners in all of north Louisiana! In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15th to October 15th, let’s explore the history of this vibrant church that sits in the heart of our community.
A Glimpse into the Past
Constructed in 1940, Christ the King is the first Catholic Church in Bossier Parish, nestled on the corner of Barksdale Blvd. and McCormick St. This stunning church showcases a charming white brick veneer in the Spanish Mission style, and back in the day, it was a significant expression of Spanish culture in the region. However, in 1978, the growing congregation saw the church completely reconstructed into a modern design that emphasized airy spaces and an abundance of windows, leaving behind the original Spanish style as a thing of the past.
Growth That Speaks Volumes
As the years went by, the essence of Spanish language and culture lingered on, manifesting through the church’s warm and welcoming community. Notably, in 1987, the Catholic Diocese of Shreveport initiated its Hispanic Ministry, aimed at reaching out to Spanish-speaking Catholics residing in the northern part of the state. As Bishop William B. Friend aptly noted back in a 1994 interview, “As Hispanic Catholics migrate into our area, we need to welcome them warmly as brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ.”
Transforming the Spiritual Landscape
In those initial years, just one Spanish Mass per month could be found at Christ the King, but the vision for growth was palpable. Things started to take a wonderful turn in 1999 when Father Rigoberto Betancurt arrived to become the go-to chaplain for Hispanic ministries across the region. His presence effortlessly brought hope and excitement to the community. It was a time when the foundation was being laid for a future where spiritual nourishment could be readily accessible to all.
Father Rigoberto’s Inspirational Journey
Father Rigoberto, fondly referred to as Father Rigo, has an inspiring story of his own. Growing up in Colombia, he faced early losses in his life, yet those challenges shaped his unwavering commitment to serve others. After years of training and a series of life experiences that brought him to places like Brussels and Rome, he made the life-changing decision to serve the Hispanic community in northwest Louisiana.
A Season of Togetherness
His arrival marked a vibrant new chapter for the Hispanic Ministry, as Spanish services flourished. By 2003, services rapidly expanded from a mere monthly offering to multiple weekly Masses at Christ the King. Additionally, the inclusion of Monday evening masses catered to those in the service industry, creating avenues for everyone to attend despite their busy schedules.
Father Rigo had a vision: to foster connections and build community. He organized soccer games, creating an inclusive environment where people could come together, bond, and receive a warm invitation to the church community. How wonderful is that?

There’s a strong desire within the church, echoed by parishioners like Mary Morgan, for a future where Spanish and Anglo communities can come together harmoniously. Imagine this: a bilingual parish, where everyone feels welcome and at home!
