Shreveport Welcomes a Night of Adventure and Stargazing
Shreveport is buzzing with excitement as a beloved local professor prepares to host a special book signing on November 2. Celebrating the release of her third book, Look Up Sealy, Cay Evans, a faculty member at LSUS, will share the enchanting tale of her main character, a young boy named Stuart, and his loyal dog, Sealy. This engaging event will take place at the Shreveport Observatory, a pristine location for stargazers and book lovers alike.
Meet Stuart and Sealy
Look Up Sealy is part of a delightful series that follows Stuart and his furry companion on various adventures as they explore the vast universe around them. Cay Evans drew inspiration for her series during her workout sessions with her personal trainer, also named Stuart Burgess. Evans describes Stuart as a comedic storyteller who often shares quirky anecdotes and fascinating facts about the stars and the cosmos. “The real Stuart is a funny person who tells these ridiculously hilarious stories, and I morph them into books,” she shared. It’s clear that their friendship forms the heart of the series.
A Cosmic Connection
The storyline of Look Up Sealy delves into themes of faith and the wonders of the universe. Evans explains, “Those stories turned into a book about how Stuart and Sealy look up at the stars, and about how God named the stars and knows us by our names.” Through the adventures of Stuart and Sealy, young readers will be invited to explore a sense of wonder, curiosity about the universe, and the comforting idea that there’s something bigger than ourselves.
A Dream Collaboration
When Evans learned about the Shreveport-Bossier Astronomical Society, Inc., she saw the perfect opportunity to merge her love for storytelling with the magic of astronomy. She reached out to the society’s president, Cran Lucas, who is also a biochemistry professor at LSUS. Lucas embraced the idea and arranged for Evans to host her book signing during one of the group’s Star Parties, where attendees gather to admire the night sky and learn more about astronomy.
Join the Celebration
The Star Party event, which incorporates the book signing, starts at 7 p.m. on November 2 at the Shreveport Observatory, located eight miles south of Shreveport on Hwy. 175. With stargazing and storytelling combined, it looks set to be a night to remember.
A Growing Community
Cran Lucas highlighted the importance of such collaborations, stating, “Our goal with the star parties is to share our love of astronomy with the public.” He believes that combining the book signing with an astronomy event will help to widen interest for both Evans’ engaging stories and the community’s love for the stars. It’s a beautiful way to bring people together, fostering a sense of community and curiosity about the world beyond our own.
