The new Amazon distribution center in Slidell, awaiting its opening.
Residents of Slidell, Louisiana, continue to anticipate the opening of a new Amazon distribution center, which has now been postponed to 2024. Originally slated for a 2022 launch, delays attributed to supply chain issues have left the community frustrated. While the building is complete, interior outfitting is still needed. The center is projected to create 200-450 jobs, offering hope to locals despite growing concerns about the vacant site impacting the neighborhood.
Excitement has been bubbling in Slidell, Louisiana, as the community looks forward to the much-anticipated opening of the new Amazon distribution center. However, that excitement has now hit a snag, with the opening being pushed back once more to 2024. Originally, residents were hopeful for an early kickoff in 2022, but here we are, still waiting.
This impressive facility boasts a hefty $40 million price tag and a sprawling size of 140,000 square feet, located conveniently on Town Center Parkway near Old Spanish Trail. Slidell Mayor Greg Comer has been in touch with representatives from Amazon, assuring locals that the site remains on the company’s agenda. Unfortunately, there is still no clear launch date locked in.
Although the external construction of the building has been wrapped up for several years, it now requires savvy inner outfitting—think racks and conveyor belts—to get the wheels turning. It’s a bit puzzling that we’ve been looking at this shiny new facility without it actually working for the community.
These delays have largely been linked to the ongoing supply chain issues and the unpredictable shifts in consumer demand that have followed the pandemic. It’s a world many are still trying to navigate, and unfortunately, poor Slidell is caught in the middle of it.
Looking at Amazon’s history in Louisiana, it is clear that the company has made significant investments in the state previously. Besides this Slidell location, there are established centers in Baton Rouge and Shreveport, with those facilities providing over 1,000 and 1,300 jobs, respectively. So, there’s plenty of reason to think that the Slidell center could eventually boost local employment numbers, but only after it finally opens its doors.
As the year rolls on and the community keeps a close eye on updates, one thing is clear—Slidell is ready for Amazon to fulfill its promise. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that 2024 will be the year the dream becomes a reality.
