Rise in Distemper Cases Among Raccoons Triggers Concerns for Pet Safety in Shreveport

Distemper Cases in Raccoons Rise in Shreveport

SHREVEPORT, La. – Caddo animal services personnel are seeing an increase in the number of animal distemper cases, with approximately 40 raccoons affected. The uptick in cases has raised concerns among residents regarding their pet’s safety in Shreveport.

City Council Meeting Addressed Concerns

During this week’s Shreveport City Council meeting, Councilwoman Tabatha Taylor highlighted the community’s worries about the rise in distemper cases and its potential impact on pets. She mentioned, “I know there have been a number of questions and concern regarding individuals with their pets, if there is any human-to-human transmission.”

Highland and Broadmoor Neighborhoods Most Affected

Most of the raccoons diagnosed with distemper have been found in the Highland and Broadmoor neighborhoods of Shreveport. Distemper is a viral infection that can affect dogs, raccoons, skunks, and foxes but does not pose a risk to cats or humans.

Warning Signs and Precautions

Kelvin Samuel from Caddo Parish Animal Services emphasized the importance of recognizing symptoms of distemper, such as ocular discharge and nasal discharge in raccoons. He advised residents not to approach raccoons exhibiting such signs during daylight, as it could be an indication of the virus.

Transmission to Dogs and Safety Measures

Dogs can contract the distemper virus through direct contact with infected animals or exposure to sneezing and coughing. The virus can also spread through shared food and water bowls. Vaccination is crucial to protect dogs, as distemper can be fatal without a cure.

Public Alert and Reporting

Citizens are urged to report any raccoons appearing sick or showing distemper symptoms during daylight to Caddo Animal Services. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is collaborating to identify the source of the virus outbreak and provide necessary interventions.

Advice for Pet Owners

Caddo animal services offer practical advice for pet owners, including vaccinating dogs against distemper, keeping pets away from wildlife, and ensuring food and water bowls are indoors. Vigilance and proactive measures are key to preventing the spread of the virus among pets.

Conclusion

The rise in distemper cases in raccoons in Shreveport underscores the importance of community awareness and responsible pet ownership. By staying informed and taking preventive actions, residents can safeguard their pets from potential risks associated with the viral infection.
