Sponsor Our ArticlesArlington, Virginia – An investigation continues regarding an incident at Arlington National Cemetery involving a physical altercation between a campaign member of former President Donald Trump and an employee of the cemetery. The situation unfolded during a solemn event commemorating three years since the Abbey Gate bombing in Afghanistan, which resulted in the deaths of 13 U.S. service members.
A police report, which was released by the Army on Friday, confirmed that an employee reported being “abruptly pushed aside” by a member of Trump’s team. While it was noted that the employee did not wish to pursue charges, the report categorized the offense as “simple assault.” However, many details within the report remain sealed or heavily redacted.
The Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall Police Department is currently leading the investigation. An Army spokesperson indicated earlier that despite the report being released, the investigation is still open, and they cannot share more information at this time. The report’s release followed a court order prompted by a lawsuit from a nonpartisan watchdog group, American Oversight, which pushed for transparency regarding the events that transpired.
During the visit to the cemetery, Trump’s team claimed that the employee attempted to block Trump’s campaign members during the event, labeling the accusation of physical altercation as false. Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for the campaign, suggested that their team possessed video evidence to support their claims, though no such footage has been presented to the public.
Trump’s campaign manager, Chris LaCivita, further described the unnamed employee’s actions as “despicable,” accusing them of spreading lies and dishonoring the military. On the other hand, many veterans’ organizations have expressed their disapproval of Trump’s visit, arguing that it politicized a sacred site.
In light of the incident, the U.S. Army issued a statement defending the actions of the Arlington National Cemetery staff. They emphasized that Trump and his campaign had been made aware of various federal laws and Army regulations that strictly prohibit political activities within the cemetery grounds. The Army pointed to the need for dignity and respect for the military personnel honored in that location.
A spokesperson reiterated, “This incident was unfortunate, and it is also unfortunate that the ANC employee and her professionalism has been unfairly attacked.” They stressed the importance of Arlington National Cemetery as a national shrine dedicated to the nation’s fallen heroes and highlighted that staff would continue to uphold the revered nature of the site.
Some families of the fallen service members have expressed their dissatisfaction with the Trump campaign’s handling of the situation. In particular, the sister of Army Master Sgt. Andrew Marckesano, who served alongside those killed in the Abbey Gate bombing, stated that the campaign did not follow established protocols during their visit. She emphasized the importance of respecting the graves and the memories of those who have sacrificed for the country.
Michele Marckesano noted, “According to our conversation with Arlington National Cemetery, the Trump Campaign staffers did not adhere to the rules that were set in place for this visit to SSGT Hoover’s grave site.” She urged visitors to understand the significance of the site and honor the memories of the service members appropriately.
The investigation into the Arlington incident remains active, with both sides continuing to make claims about the events that took place. Meanwhile, Arlington National Cemetery holds its ground as a place of reverence, demanding respect for the sacrifices made by those laid to rest within its grounds.
