Benton, Louisiana: A Symbol of Community Pride Gets a Facelift

The Benton High Gym, a historic landmark dating back 85 years, has started its journey through a comprehensive renovation journey. This venerable structure first opened its doors in 1939, a few years ahead of World War II, and has since served the community in various roles – as a school gym, community center, and warehouse

Rebirth of an Historic Landmark

On the 6th of June, a significant day in world history, the restoration project began, marking a new chapter in the life of this noteworthy structure. The renovation aims to breathe life back into the aged structure, turning it into a critical part of the Bossier Schools district’s future.

The Renovation Project: A Glimpse into the Future

The renovation works kicked off with heavy machinery breaking up deteriorated concrete to pave the way for a revamped parking area and a pleasant green space leading to the building. Interior construction, beginning soon, will refurbish vital amenities. New electrical wiring, plumbing, window frames, and fresh paint will come together to give the building its much-needed facelift.

The renovation’s final aim is not only restoration but also repurposing – turning the antique gym into a modern office space. Employees who have been working in cramped and decaying spaces look forward to the newly refashioned interiors with eagerness. An additional boon preserving unique aspects of the gym: its open-concept design and original architectural facets are to be retained, with the scoreboard clock returned to its original placement after meticulous restoration by the maintenance team.

Anouncement by the School’s Superintendent

“Today we are commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day while also preserving history and breathing life back into that historic 85-year-old gym and making it an important part of Bossier Schools’ future,” enthused the Bossier Schools Superintendent.

Community Enthusiasm Encourages Restoration

The Supervisor of the Maintenance Department noted the thoughtfulness being put into the restoration project. “It’s not just restoring a box. We are restoring a building with meaning to the people here,” the supervisor said.

With completion anticipated in the Fall of 2024, the renovated structure promises to unlock a new era in the history of the Bossier Schools district and the entire community. The once 85-year-old Benton High Gym will stand proudly as a testament to the community’s rich past and its robust future.
