Why It Matters

This event isn’t just about good food; it’s also about building our community. The challenge of economic inequality affects many local businesses, and Black Restaurant Week aims to address this. By pushing for economic impact in the local restaurant industry, we not only support Black-owned businesses but also help raise awareness about the essential role they play in Shreveport-Bossier. According to a statement from the SBAACC, “Supporting Black-owned restaurants plays a crucial role in achieving socio-economic upliftment, and the sustainable implementation of these benefits will strengthen the entire community and open opportunities for future generations.”

A Culinary Legacy

One of the standout participants of this year’s celebration is the iconic Orlandeaux’s. Known as one of the oldest-running Black restaurants in America, it began its journey as Freeman & Harris Cafe around 1921. Damien Chapman, the owner, expressed his pride in participating, stating, “Black Restaurant Week is so very important to me because it gives us a time to celebrate, support and shine a light on, not just Orlandeaux’s, but all of the wonderful black-owned restaurants in our area. Through the last century, our family has filled the bellies of the people of this city, so it’s our duty to continue to serve our Creole Cuisine to our community for another 100 years!”

What Can You Expect?

Throughout the week, visitors can expect a variety of special menu items and curated dining experiences that highlight the rich flavors, history, and culture of Black culinary traditions. Whether you’re craving soul food, Southern comfort classics, or innovative takes on beloved dishes, there’s something for everyone.
