Sponsor Our ArticlesToday was quite the day in Bossier City! After nearly two decades in the making and two years of construction, the community came together to unveil the amazing Walter O. Bigby Carriageway. This new roadway is set to change the landscape of transportation in the city and make life a little easier for all of us.
The excitement was palpable as city officials, community leaders, and residents gathered for the ribbon cutting ceremony. The mood was upbeat, and smiles were everywhere. Lisa Johnson, the president of the Bossier Chamber of Commerce, perfectly captured the sentiment when she stated, “Traffic relief, I think that’s the word of the day right?” Everyone couldn’t agree more. The new carriageway connects neighborhoods like never before, helping to ease congestion.
The carriageway stretches from Benton Road between Douglas and Riverwood, all the way to the statue of Walter O. Bigby on East Texas Street. It’s not just about convenience; this new route also brings a beautiful sense of connectivity across the city.
Bossier City Mayor Tommy Chandler acknowledged the hard work and commitment of many leaders who came before him. “We are here today because of all the hard work and commitment of many city leaders and mayors before me,” he shared during the ceremony. It was heartwarming to see the dedication that has gone into this project over the years.
City councilman David Montgomery added, “A vote of the people provided a connection bringing both south Bossier and north Bossier via the Walter O. Bigby Carriageway without any railroad crossings.” This means safer and more seamless travel for residents as they move around town without delays from trains.
The first person to drive the new carriageway was none other than Walter Bigby Jr., the son of the man who the road is named after. He took a moment to reflect on his father’s legacy saying, “Most of all my dad loved Bossier City. Walter O. Bigby was a judge, an esteemed state representative that was praised and respected by his colleagues. But, maybe more importantly, Walter O. Bigby was a proud citizen, husband, and father.” It’s clear that this new roadway is not only an infrastructure improvement but a tribute to a beloved figure in the community.
So what does this mean for the residents of Bossier City? It’s a win-win! With an additional north/south corridor, commuters can expect shorter travel times and reduced traffic congestion, making daily commutes less stressful. Local businesses may also see a boost as easier access to different parts of the city could encourage more foot traffic.
As we all drive along the Walter O. Bigby Carriageway in the days to come, let’s take a moment to appreciate the years of planning and hard work it took to bring this project to life. Today, we not only cut a ribbon—we also opened doors to new opportunities for our community.
Cheers to the future of Bossier City with the opening of the Walter O. Bigby Carriageway!
