In the heart of Bossier City, Louisiana, the community came together this past weekend to remember and honor the life of a remarkable woman, La’Keia Rawls. La’Keia’s story, like so many others, is intertwined with the tragic effects of domestic violence. However, her family and friends refuse to let her memory fade away.
For the thirteenth consecutive year, the Parkway High School J.R.O.T.C. hosted a run in La’Keia’s honor, and it was a heartwarming sight to see so many participants gather for the cause. La’Keia, who tragically lost her life to domestic violence in 2012, was a proud member of Bossier High School’s R.O.T.C. program. Her mother, Victoria Rawls, shared, “We come out every year; this is the 13th year, and we do the run, and the money that is raised goes to the Salvation Army.” It’s truly inspiring to see how her legacy continues to thrive.
Described as a vibrant soul, La’Keia Rawls was a 2004 graduate of Bossier High School known for her infectious smile and love for life. “She was just a fun-loving person, always smiling. She was a track runner, and she was just an all-around person,” her mother fondly remembered.
The run attracted 42 participants, all united for a common cause, and together they raised an impressive $1,300 for the Salvation Army. “I’ve done it about ten years, and I do it because it’s for a good cause and for an amazing family,” shared runner Brooklyn Warren. This demonstrates the deep-rooted commitment of the community to not only support La’Keia’s family but also to raise awareness about domestic violence.
As the race unfolded, it became evident that this event means more than just a fundraising opportunity; it’s a heartfelt reminder to keep La’Keia’s spirit alive. “It means a lot because that means everybody gave more than what was asked. It is only $5 to register, so that tells a lot about people and keeping La’Keia’s memory alive,” Victoria exclaimed with pride.
This year, La’Keia would have celebrated her 38th birthday on December 11. While the day was undoubtedly tinged with bittersweet emotions, it was a celebration of La’Keia’s vibrant spirit and the impact she made on everyone around her. It’s evident that the love for her remains strong and continues to inspire those who knew her and even those who didn’t.
With the success of this year’s event, the Parkway High School J.R.O.T.C. is already gearing up for next year’s run. The community is eager to continue showing its support. As plans unfold, one thing is clear: La’Keia’s legacy will endure, shining a light on the fight against domestic violence.
For anyone looking to support this vital initiative, remember that every dollar counts, and participation in events like these is a powerful way to honor victims of domestic violence. The warmth of community spirit in Bossier City is palpable, and with events like the La’Keia Rawls run, her memory will undoubtedly live on for years to come.
Bossier City stands united, showing that together, we can make a difference and ensure that domestic violence victims are not forgotten. As they lace up their running shoes for the next event, the community sends a powerful message: Love always wins!
