Exciting Beginnings for Caddo Parish Schools in Shreveport!

As the sunny days of summer fade away, a new chapter opens for Caddo Parish Public Schools in Shreveport, Louisiana. On August 9, 2023, the district officially welcomed students back for another school year, bringing a sense of hope and enthusiasm to the classrooms.

Hands-On Learning in Action

Bright smiles filled the halls of Fairfield Elementary Magnet School, where second-graders eagerly participated in a lively STEM class. These little learners were busy stringing together colorful Legos to spell out their names—a fun and creative way to dive into the realms of science, technology, engineering, and math. It’s clear that innovation is not just a buzzword here; it’s a way of life!

Leading the Way in Academic Recovery

After facing some hefty challenges due to pandemic disruptions, Caddo Parish Schools are stepping up to the plate and emerging as a leader in academic recovery, both within Louisiana and across the nation. Various reports from the Education Recovery Scorecard reveal that the district has surpassed not only state educational trends but also the national average. Quite an impressive feat!

In fact, Caddo Parish is one of the few districts in Louisiana that can proudly claim overall net positive gains in subjects like math and reading since 2019. The numbers speak for themselves—Caddo outperformed state averages in both areas, firmly establishing itself as a model for student success.

Strategies for Success

The reason behind these remarkable achievements? A combination of effective strategies, top-notch teachers, and high-quality resources has created a winning formula. The math recovery in the district exceeded not only the Louisiana state average but also other comparable districts. Reading proficiency witnessed a notable improvement of 0.41 grade levels, which is double the state’s average gain of 0.21.

The district’s approach remains centered around student-focused methods and data-driven interventions, ensuring that every child gets the support they need to thrive in their academic journey.

Plans for a Bright Future

Looking ahead, Caddo Parish Schools have ambitious plans to continue enhancing literacy and numeracy initiatives. The focus will also be on increasing family engagement and boosting teacher support and professional development. With such proactive measures in place, it’s clear the district is setting the stage for continued success!

A Historic Achievement

In light of its achievements, Caddo Parish has made history with a significant increase in its District Performance Score, elevating the district’s overall letter grade to a solid ‘B’. This marks the highest ranking under the state’s accountability system!

School Performance Highlights

This school year, thirty-six schools in the district have seen an increase in student performance. To top it off, nine schools were able to elevate their performance by a letter grade. Exciting progress has also been made at Broadmoor STEM Academy, which improved to a ‘D’ after a notable growth spurt!

Notably, fifteen schools secured a Top Gains designation from the Louisiana Department of Education for outstanding student progress. Additionally, nine schools were honored as Opportunity Honorees for their exemplary support of special education students, English language learners, and those living in poverty.

Empowering Learning Environments

Caddo Parish has taken into account the challenges faced by many families, with around 70% of students coming from impoverished homes. To enhance educational offerings, the Caddo Parish School Board has voted to create K-8 academies at Broadmoor STEM and J.S. Clark Elementary, set to open for the 2025-26 school year.

A Curriculum of Exploration!

The new STEM-focused Broadmoor Academy will present hands-on experiences across various subjects, while the J.S. Clark Academy will concentrate on exploring career paths for students. For families interested in these fresh offerings, transportation will be provided for those who live more than a mile away, making it easier for students to take advantage of these unique learning opportunities.

Enrolling in the academies will require families to commit to a full school year, ensuring a consistent and enriching educational experience for all students.

Creating Engaging Learning Opportunities

With these thoughtful changes on the horizon, Caddo Parish Schools aspire to create an engaging learning environment that aligns with students’ interests and future career prospects. As this new school year unfolds, one thing’s for sure—the future of education in Shreveport is looking bright!
