LSUHS Announces New Chief Financial Officer, Ramey Benfield

LSU Health Shreveport Rhode Island’s forthcoming Chief Financial Officer, Ramey Benfield, is set to commence his tenure on June 1, 2024. The selection of the seasoned finance executive points to a promising future for LSUHS.

Ramey Benfield at The Helm of Finance

Announced on May 10, 2024, Ramey A. Benfield, PhD, MBA, MS, will be taking reins as the Chief Financial Officer at LSU Health Shreveport on June 1. As the top officer managing the institution’s finances, Benfield will oversee everything financial at LSUHS. His portfolio includes managing general accounting, billing, accounts payable, direct pay, travel, bursar operations, payroll, purchasing, auxiliary services, and all financial components of the research grant management.

Key Role in Strategic Decision Making

In his new role, Benfield will not only manage the daily finances of LSUHS but also play a strategic part in shaping the university’s financial future. He is expected to be an active partner in strategic decision-making processes, providing in-depth financial analysis, strategy, and business plans to help guide university leadership.

Previous Experience and Accomplishments

Ramey Benfield has amassed a wealth of experience in finance management, making him a highly qualified candidate for the CFO position at LSUHS. Most recently, he served as the Associate Vice President Business Affairs and Operations and the Assistant Vice President for Administrative Services at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine. His experience extends back to 11 years when he served as the Assistant Dean for Finance & Administration at the Texas A&M University Irema Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy. Beginning his career at the MD Anderson Cancer Center and the DeBakey Heart Center in Houston marked his entry into healthcare and medical education finance. Such extensive tenure is a testimony to his proficiency in improving financial processes and outcomes, managing large teams, creating consistent financial reporting practices, and shaping a culture of customer service and accountability.

Educational Background

Benfield’s academic background is just as impressive as his professional career. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Master of Science in Clinical Gerontology from Baylor University. Further, he completed his Master of Business Administration with a concentration in finance from the University of St. Thomas in Houston. He topped these achievements with a Doctor of Philosophy in Higher Education Administration from the University of Phoenix.
