Get ready, Shreveport! The beloved Cirque du Lake festival is back and better than ever as it celebrates its 10th anniversary. Mark your calendars for September 21, because this year’s festival will be an explosion of local artistry, community spirit, and creativity! Best of all, attendance is totally free, and there’s plenty of free parking to make your visit even easier.
Cirque du Lake began its journey in 2013 when a few local businesses in the 400 block of Lake Street decided to band together. These businesses—Just Bites, iArchitecture, Sweet Port, and Good Granoly—wanted to create something special that brought art, handmade goods, and sustainable products to downtown Shreveport. As Katy Larsen, owner of the Agora Borealis, recalls, “When we opened our businesses, we started this little festival. It began inside of our building the first year, and then the following four years, we had it outside in the street.”
What initially started as a small street party has blossomed into a much-anticipated annual festival, attracting both locals and visitors alike. “It was a celebration of the businesses of Lake Street, saying thank you to the public for spending their time with us,” Larsen explained.
After a hiatus due to COVID-19, Cirque du Lake is back and ready to reclaim its vibrant spot in the community. Eric Hess, one of the founders of Sanctuary Glass, expressed his excitement: “(Cirque du Lake) just seemed so successful. We want to draw a lot of attention to what is happening down here.”
This year’s theme, “A Celebration of Local Artistry, Community, and Creativity,” promises a jam-packed day filled with activities for everyone. The festival spans four hours, offering a delightful array of entertainment including jugglers, magicians, and even stilt walkers! Plus, you won’t want to miss the food vendors and live performances that are sure to tantalize your taste buds and lift your spirits.
Attendees can look forward to a variety of attractions. With around 30 artists showcasing their work, there will be plenty of local talent to appreciate. This festival primarily focuses on local artists, unlike larger events like Red River Revel. Larsen notes, “We make sure we’re shining a spotlight on them.”
Festival visitors will be treated to live music from two bands: Bond Plus and Six Car Pileup, alongside local DJ Faze spinning tunes that will keep everyone grooving. For those curious about art, Hess and his team will hold glass-blowing demonstrations, and Josh Ellis from Spinner Entertainment will be there to dazzle crowds with amazing magic tricks.
Children and adults alike will find joy as an airbrush artist creates customized shirts and caps on-site. And if you enjoy a good culinary experience, you’ll love the diverse selection of food trucks offering barbecue, Asian, and Mexican cuisine. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, there’s something delicious for everyone!
This year’s festival isn’t just about fun; it’s a heartfelt thank you from the local community to its residents. “The Lake Street area is kind of this thriving area with businesses and artists. It really helps artists; that’s a huge part of it. And it helps people to celebrate and get out and do things,” Hess remarked.
So, gather your friends, family, and even your pets, and head over to Cirque du Lake this September 21! It’s not just a festival; it’s a celebration of everything that makes Shreveport special. Let’s bring it back to its former glory together!
