Bossier City Council Takes Big Steps for Community Improvement
Bossier City is buzzing after the latest council meeting on Tuesday, where some exciting changes were discussed to help ease the strain on the city’s criminal justice system and lend a hand to local businesses. The council has rolled up its sleeves and taken on various issues, making strides that will surely benefit the community.
Introducing the Pretrial Diversion Program
One of the main highlights from the meeting was the establishment of the Bossier City Prosecutor’s Pretrial Diversion Program. This initiative aims to lighten the load of criminal trials by offering low-risk defendants an alternative pathway that could lead to more positive outcomes. What does this mean for those involved? Well, defendants who qualify can complete community service, attend counseling sessions for substance abuse or theft, or simply pay off fines instead of going through a grueling trial process.
If they successfully complete the program, their criminal charges might just disappear, along with any record of that incident. It’s similar to successful programs seen in other cities, such as a noteworthy initiative in Illinois, where a mere 11% of participants ended up with new charges after finishing their diversion program. Sounds like a win-win for both the individuals and the community!
Tax Break for Live! Casino and Hotel
In other council news, a tax break has been granted to the new Live! Casino and Hotel. The city council joined forces with the Bossier Parish Police Jury and the Bossier Parish School Board to offer a 10-year, $20 million property tax exemption to this burgeoning entertainment venue. This move is expected to bring more jobs and excitement to Bossier City, and who doesn’t love that? With the casino on the map, locals will have more options for entertainment and leisure.
Convenience Store and Gas Station on the Horizon
Additionally, the council has approved a zoning change for a new convenience store and gas station at 1843 Innovation Drive. As the community grows, so do its needs, and this project seems to be a perfect fit, providing easy access to gas and convenience items for all residents.
Keep Bossier Beautiful Update
Keeping Bossier City picturesque is the goal of the Keep Bossier Beautiful project, and executive director Lynn Bryan took center stage to share the organization’s recent accomplishments. After a busy 2024, which included a clean-up on Cypress Lake Bayou, planting trees across the parish, and even adding a new community garden in Haughton, it’s clear they are hard at work.
Most notably, they donated a new compactor to the Bossier Parish Police Jury to replace five dumpsters behind the courthouse. The compactor facilitates the recycling of cardboard and paper, promoting sustainability in the community.
Veterans Memorial Resurfacing Plans
In a heartfelt moment during the meeting, citizen activist Cassie Rogers brought attention to the Bossier Caddo Veterans Memorial located outside the municipal complex. She expressed gratitude to the Mayor’s office for confirming that plans are underway to resurface the memorial. This renovation is sure to enhance the area and pay homage to the sacrifices made by local veterans.
Rogers also invited fellow veterans and their families to consider purchasing commemorative bricks at the site, as there are still some spots available. A personal touch, she shared her own intention of adding her brick in memory of her best friend who made the ultimate sacrifice. It’s an inspiring opportunity to honor those who served.
