Remembering Officer Matthew Rhoden: A Light Shines Brightest in Dark Times

Shreveport, La. – A cloud of sorrow has enveloped our community as we come to grips with the tragic loss of Officer Matthew Rhoden, a beloved dedicated patrol officer. The 37-year-old officer lost his life in an off-duty car accident on Friday, leaving behind a legacy of service and camaraderie that will not soon be forgotten.

Officer Rhoden became a member of the Shreveport Police Department in 2021 and quickly made a name for himself in the Mooretown neighborhood, where he was known for his infectious sense of humor, unwavering kindness, and commitment to his role as a teammate. His colleagues have shared heartfelt memories of his jovial personality and how he consistently went above and beyond to create a positive environment at work.

A Tragic Incident

The tragic event unfolded at around 2 p.m. at the intersection of West 70th Street and Pines Road. Officer Rhoden and a friend, fellow officer Aaron Moran, were cruising down the road in their blue Mustang when suddenly, the driver of a white van appeared to turn into their path. The Mustang skidded before it collided with a vacant house and ultimately overturned. Sadly, Officer Rhoden died at the scene, leaving a profound void that will be felt throughout the department and the community at large.

In the Wake of Loss

Officer Moran, who also sustained serious injuries, was quickly rushed to Ochsner LSU Health hospital, where he is currently in critical condition. The Shreveport Police Department has reached out to the community to express gratitude for the overwhelming support and prayers during this trying time. Police Chief Wayne Smith has shared how much the support means to the officers and to Officer Rhoden’s family, saying, “As we navigate this devastating loss, we are deeply touched by the outpouring of support from the community.”

Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux also shared his heartfelt condolences, stating, “While words can hardly ease the pain felt by his family, friends, and colleagues, I want them to know that our entire community stands with them during this difficult time.” He further highlighted Officer Rhoden’s traits of courage, honor, and selflessness, reminding us all of the sacrifices made by those who serve to protect us.

Standing United

During these trying moments, Mayor Arceneaux has called on all of us to come together, not just to mourn this loss but also to support one another. “The loss of Officer Rhoden is a profound reminder of the risks our law enforcement officers face every day. We must stand united as a city,” he urged.

The Shreveport community is known for its resilience and compassion, and we have seen this first-hand as individuals from all walks of life band together to honor Officer Rhoden’s memory. The messages of support, love, and remembrance are flowing in from everywhere, and they are a real testament to the impact that Officer Rhoden had on those around him.

Looking Ahead

As we remember this passionate and dedicated officer, funeral services are still being arranged, but the anticipation of a community coming together to celebrate his life is already stirring spirits. While we grieve, let’s cherish the memories of this remarkable individual who put others before himself, exemplifying what it means to be a true hero. Officer Rhoden may be gone, but his spirit and the legacy of his service will remain forever in our hearts.

Let’s all take a moment to reflect on the strength of our community, the sacrifices made by those who serve, and the importance of lifting each other up in times of need. Together, we will heal.
