Legendary Educational Leader Dr. Sandra McCalla Passes Away in Caddo Parish

CADDO PARISH, La. — The admirable and pioneering educator, Dr. Sandra McCalla, known for her long-standing dedication to the field of education, especially at Captain Shreve High School as principal, passed away aged 84, as per the recent announcement from the Caddo Parish Public Schools. Her significant contributions spanning over 55 years will be remembered in the educational sphere, particularly in Caddo Parish, where she held the helm of captain Shreve High School over an extensive period.

A Remarkable Career and Legacy

Dr. McCalla was more than just a mentor to many; she was seen as a ground-breaking figure who showed immense dedication towards the advancement of education. In 1979, she made history by becoming the first female high school principal in Caddo Parish.

In her own words from 2015, just before her retirement, Dr. McCalla retrospectively addressed the surprise and apprehension that surrounded her appointment as a female principal in the late ’70s. “Women just weren’t high school principals at the time. I will never forget sitting in the Superintendent’s office and him saying more than once that he couldn’t believe he was going to recommend a woman for principal of a high school,” she said.

Despite the initial challenges, Dr. McCalla proved herself as a capable and influential leader. She further reflected, “After I was hired, I remember walking into my first high school athletic meeting—the only women were me and a few nuns, but other than that it was a room full of men. That’s when it began to sink in.”
