Shreveport, LA – In a heartwarming celebration of leadership, the Greater Shreveport Chamber proudly announced that Dr. Wanda Henderson Thomas has been awarded the 2024 ATHENA International Leadership Award. The announcement was made during the 34th Annual Leadership Award Luncheon on November 14, 2024, an event that brought together many prominent community members and supporters, and was graciously sponsored by Ochsner LSU Health.
Dr. Timothy Magner, President of the Greater Shreveport Chamber, expressed his delight in recognizing Dr. Thomas, stating, “We are so pleased to recognize Dr. Thomas as the 2024 ATHENA recipient. Dr. Thomas exemplifies the best in our community in her many roles as a physician, administrator, mentor, and volunteer.” Her dedication and contributions to both her profession and community make her an invaluable asset to Shreveport.
Dr. Thomas is a full professor at the Department of Pediatrics at LSU Health Shreveport. She plays several key roles, including that of the Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Program Director and Associate Dean for Admissions. Over her remarkable 24-year career, she has been a guiding force in shaping the future of healthcare within the region, having mentored countless young women and contributed to the professional growth of students and colleagues alike.
Beyond her impressive professional achievements, Dr. Thomas is a pillar in the Shreveport community. She’s actively involved in several organizations, including the Shreveport Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Red River Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc., and the Shreveport Chapter of Links, Inc.. Her commitment to giving back is evident as she also holds the position of board member and treasurer for the Community Foundation of North Louisiana.
At the awards luncheon, Verni Howard, the chair of the BDC ATHENA committee, shared her pride in the accomplishments of the women being recognized. “I am so proud of the accomplishments of these women and to have given leadership to this year’s event,” she remarked. This award celebrates those who have not only achieved the highest levels of professional excellence but also made substantial contributions to improve the quality of life in their communities and actively create opportunities for other women to reach their potential.
Since the ATHENA program commenced in 1982, it has recognized more than 8,000 leaders from over 500 communities around the globe. Honorees hail from various countries, including the United States, Canada, China, Greece, and many others. Locally, the Greater Shreveport Chamber has proudly recognized over 450 leaders who reflect these exceptional qualities, and Dr. Thomas is now among this esteemed group.
