Shreveport, La. is buzzing with excitement as big news rolls in about a project that’s been in the works for quite a while now. The Port of Caddo-Bossier Commission is taking a huge step forward with the announcement of federal funding to help build a frontage road along the future route of Interstate 69. U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy, a key player in this development, shared the great news this Wednesday: the project will benefit from a generous donation of $22.5 million!
For many residents and business leaders, this funding feels like a dream come true. Executive Port Director Eric England expressed his joy, declaring that today marks “one of the most incredible days in the port’s history.” The idea behind the project is to create a direct link from The Port of Caddo-Bossier to Interstate 49, making it much easier for large trucks and 18-wheelers to get on the road and move goods around efficiently. England noted, “This roadway project is incredible for the local area. We’re going to alleviate traffic on Louisiana Highway 1, 3132 Bert Kouns, [and] the Inner Loop. We’re going to have a direct shot from The Port to 49.”
This new roadway is pivotal because it represents the very first leg of I-69 in Louisiana, a connection that many residents might’ve thought would never come to pass in their lifetime. With engineering teams already hard at work on the design, some early construction could even kick off by late 2025! What a great way to toast to progress and future growth in the region!
Senator Cassidy pointed out the importance of having reliable roads to ensure smooth connections between ports and businesses across the state. He stated, “The Caddo-Bossier I-69 connector will be yet another reason companies choose to invest in North Louisiana and allow us to build an economy for 2050.” This investment doesn’t just benefit the port; it could also lead to significant economic growth for the entire community!
So, what exactly does this project entail? The proposed 10-mile link will consist of seven miles in DeSoto Parish and the remaining 3.5 miles in Caddo. The area will be known as the I-69 service road, designed specifically to run parallel with the proposed route of I-69 through Nebraska.
I-69 is a crucial transportation route connecting Laredo, Texas to Port Huron, Michigan, and this new road is essential for enhancing connectivity in the region. England noted that this project isn’t just about pavement; it’s about creating opportunities. The Port has added around 2,000 acres around its site, expanding its total footprint to 4,000 acres. He said, “This roadway will provide access to these sites. Think of it as having interstate connector road frontage for these sites, giving them a direct route to the interstate.”
Executing a project of this magnitude is no small feat. The anticipated cost exceeds $81 million and has involved collaborative efforts from various stakeholders, including Caddo Parish, DeSoto Parish, Bossier City, and the Northwest Louisiana Council of Governments. It’s a fantastic example of what can be achieved when a community comes together for a common goal.
In short, the new I-69 frontage road is poised to transform the landscape of transportation and logistics in Shreveport and its surroundings. With a bright future ahead, local leaders and residents alike are eagerly anticipating the benefits and opportunities that this new roadway will undoubtedly bring.
