Grambling State University Hosts Annual Constitution Day Observance Featuring Newly Elected Caddo Parish Sheriff

Grambling, Louisiana: A Celebration of Democracy at Grambling State University

Today, Grambling State University is gearing up for an exciting celebration as it hosts its annual Constitution Day Observance. This year’s event promises to be especially memorable, featuring a keynote address by none other than Henry Whitehorn, the newly elected Caddo Parish Sheriff. The gathering will kick off at 11 a.m. in the T.H. Harris Auditorium, and everyone is invited to join in on the festivities.

An Inspiring Speaker

Henry Whitehorn, who recently made history by becoming Caddo Parish’s first Black sheriff, will deliver a thoughtful speech titled, “We The People.” It’s a title that resonates deeply, reminding us all of the democratic values that bind us. Whitehorn, a seasoned law enforcement professional with a remarkable career spanning over four decades, brings a wealth of experience and a unique perspective to the topic.

Since his election on March 23, 2024, Whitehorn has stood as a symbol of progress and leadership in the community. His journey to this pivotal role began much earlier, with extensive service in various law enforcement capacities. Before his election, he served as the Chief Administrative Officer for Shreveport from February 2020 to December 2022. His commitment to public safety was further marked by his role as the United States Marshal for the Western District of Louisiana, a position he held until January 31, 2020.

A Diverse Background of Service

Whitehorn’s path to leadership in law enforcement started as a patrolman with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department. His dedication to public service led him to join the Louisiana State Police in 1978, where he climbed the ranks to become the Superintendent. His experience in law enforcement is backed by his educational achievements, including a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from Louisiana State University – Shreveport and a Master of Science in Criminal Justice from Grambling State University. Moreover, he has attended prestigious institutions, including the FBI National Academy and the Harvard Kennedy School.

A Family Man

Beyond his impressive career, Whitehorn is also a dedicated family man. He has been happily married to Waverlyn Whitehorn for 48 years, and together they have two children, Henry Jr. and Natasha. It’s clear that family values play an important role in his life, alongside his commitment to serving the community.

Community Recognition

Throughout his career, Whitehorn has received numerous awards and commendations for his outstanding service. His recognition in the community speaks volumes about his dedication and impact on public safety and justice. As he prepares to speak today, one can only imagine how his experiences and insights will resonate with students, faculty, and community members alike.

Join in the Celebration

Today’s observance at Grambling State University is more than just a ceremony; it’s a chance for everyone to engage with the values of democracy and governance. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from a community leader who embodies the spirit of resilience, service, and leadership.

Whether you’re a student looking to learn more about the Constitution or a community member eager to hear an inspiring story of achievement against the odds, this event promises valuable insights and a celebration of what it means to be part of a democratic society. So, mark your calendars and bring along your friends and family to share in this special occasion at 11 a.m.!

We hope to see many of you there as we come together to celebrate the principles that unite us and reflect on how we can uphold them in our daily lives. Don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity!
