Heat Advisory in Effect in Shelby County: Heat Index Peaks at 112

Heat Advisory in Effect in Shelby County: Heat Index Peaks at 112

The National Weather Service, based in Shreveport, Louisiana, issued a heat advisory early on Monday, July 1, 2024. The advisory, which remains in effect until 8pm on Tuesday, July 2nd, affects parts of southwest Arkansas, north central and northwest Louisiana, southeast Oklahoma, and east and northeast Texas. Amid forecasts of high temperatures and humidity that could lead to potentially dangerous heat illnesses, residents of these areas are urged to take precautions to protect their health.

Heat Advisory Affecting the Region

The heat advisory was issued at 2:14am, citing an expected heat index of up to 112 for certain locations within the affected region, which includes Shelby County. A heat index combines temperature and relative humidity to offer a measure of how hot it ‘feels’ to the human body. This ‘real feel’ temperature can, in many cases, be even more dangerous than the ambient temperature alone.

Health Risks and Precautions

Health risks during a heat advisory can be severe, including heat exhaustion, heat cramps or, in extreme cases, heat stroke, which can be fatal if not immediately treated. Vulnerable people including the elderly, infants, and those with underlying health conditions are at even greater risk during these conditions.

Residents are urged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms where possible, avoid the sun, and check on relatives and neighbors. To lower the risk of heat-related illness, it’s also recommended that people avoid strenuous tasks or exercise during the hottest parts of the day, usually between 10am and 4pm.

Further Information and Updates

Residents should stay updated on the latest weather information. They should adjust their plans accordingly taking into account the high temperatures, especially if outdoor activities were planned. Future updates about the heat advisory will be provided as and when the conditions change.
