SHREVEPORT, La. – Excitement is in the air as the Huntington High School Band prepares to take the stage at the upcoming LMEA State Marching Band competition in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Band director Roderick Jefferson, Ed.D., shared his enthusiasm, stating, “We are participating in a LMEA State Marching Band competition in Lake Charles, Louisiana.” What makes this even more special is that they are the only band from Shreveport representing the area at this significant event.
Known affectionately as the “Radio Jukebox,” the Huntington High School Band has an impressive repertoire and is ready to showcase their talent. “We can play anything,” Jefferson proudly declared. A victory in this competition would crown them the top show band in the state, adding yet another treasure to their collection of accolades.
Jefferson has been the band director since 2011, and during his tenure, the band has seen phenomenal growth—from just 30 members in 2011 to a vibrant community of 120 members this year. Jefferson noted, “We got so many that we had to turn away because we didn’t have enough trombones, baritones, or trumpets.” It’s clear that the band has become a vital part of the school and the community.
For many students, being part of the band is more than just music; it’s a life-changing experience. Senior McKenzie Bell, a saxophonist, mentioned, “It gives me the right mind space from everything else that goes on.” Another senior, Jeremiah Moore, shared how he has gained confidence through his experiences in the band over the past four years. “I’ve been in this band for four years. I gained a lot of confidence in classrooms everywhere,” he said.
Jefferson takes pride in the band’s achievements, emphasizing their impressive track record. “I don’t brag, but we’re the only marching band in all of Louisiana, probably Louisiana, period, that has won first place and grand champion every year for 13 straight years since I’ve been here,” he remarked. For Bell, the feeling of always winning is exhilarating. “It feels amazing, like being on the winning team, always winning. We get to show everybody what we’re capable of and what we bring to the table,” she expressed.
The upcoming competition on November 4 in Lake Charles presents a chance for the band to earn another championship, but they need the community’s support to make it happen. Jefferson explained, “Transportation cost is about $7,000, and for hotels, about $5,000.” Without financial backing from the community, the band may not be able to make the trip. “We don’t make the trip,” he cautioned.
In order to fund their journey, the hopeful band is actively organizing fundraisers, with the dream of adding yet another state championship to their successful history. “And it’s a big deal because if we win our division, we will be crowned the top show band of Louisiana,” Jefferson stated.
Members of the community who would like to contribute can make donations by sending a check payable to the Huntington High School Band. Checks can be dropped off or mailed to Huntington High School at 6801 Raspberry Lane Shreveport, La., 71129.
The Huntington High School Band embodies the spirit of teamwork and perseverance, and with their impressive talent and the support of their community, they are ready to make their mark at the state competition. Let’s rally behind these young musicians as they march forward toward their dreams!
