Nation Honors Jimmy Carter as Funeral Procession Starts in His Hometown

The heartfelt farewell for former President Jimmy Carter officially began with a solemn procession transporting his casket from his beloved Plains, Georgia, to the bustling city of Atlanta. The respected leader passed away on December 29, 2023, just a few days shy of what would have been his 101st birthday.

Shortly after 10:20 a.m. on a chilly Saturday morning, the scene unfolded outside the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in nearby Americus, approximately 10 miles from Plains. Members of Carter’s Secret Service detail, who had become like family over the years, carried out their late leader’s final wish by escorting his casket to the hearse with great reverence.

It was a poignant moment as family members, including his children Jack, Chip, Jeff, and Amy, made their first public appearance since the sad news broke, adding a deeply personal touch to the procession. Their presence brought tears to the eyes of many who gathered along the route to pay their respects.

As the motorcade rolled through Plains, it was clear that the community cherished Carter. About 300 locals and visitors stood lined along both sides of the road, some holding touching signs and waving American flags in a show of admiration. It was truly a representation of the love and deep gratitude this community held for their former president.

Local resident Emily DeVane reflected on the historic significance of the day, joyfully recalling her own personal encounters with Carter, who was known for his humble demeanor and warmth. The motorcade included a route that passed by his childhood home and the family farm, where an old farm bell rang 39 times in honor of his age and his life.

People traveled from as far away as Bloomington, Illinois, just to take part in this momentous occasion, showing the former president’s lasting impact across the nation. The heartfelt scene truly painted a picture of a beloved figure whose influence spanned far beyond the borders of Plains.

Upon reaching Atlanta, the motorcade made a pause at the Georgia Capitol. Here, Governor Brian Kemp and Atlanta’s Mayor Andre Dickens led a moment of silence that echoed the nation’s grief for the statesman who not only played a significant role in U.S. history but also made a mark on the world stage through his humanitarian efforts.

Next, the procession made its way to the Carter Center, where a more intimate private service was scheduled for family members and dignitaries. During the service, his grandson Jason Carter underscored the importance of upholding the values and work that his grandfather personified throughout his life.

In a beautiful tribute to his dedication to service, Carter’s body is set to lie in public repose until early Tuesday, prior to being flown to Washington, D.C., for further ceremonies. Citizens will have the opportunity to honor him as he lies in state in the Capitol Rotunda. A state funeral will take place at the esteemed Washington National Cathedral on January 9, 2024.

Born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Jimmy Carter served proudly as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981. His legacy continued long after his presidency, as he devoted his life to humanitarian efforts, a pursuit for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

His beloved wife, Rosalynn Carter, sadly passed away on November 19, 2023, at the age of 96 and is buried on the family grounds, leaving behind a legacy of love and commitment to the community.

The ceremony not only honored the life of Jimmy Carter but also celebrated his legacy as a humble servant who dedicated himself to his local community and made a profound impact on the global stage.
