Shreveport Community Mourns the Loss of Shelby Lee Smith

Shreveport, Louisiana is coming together to remember and celebrate the life of a truly remarkable man, Shelby Lee Smith, who passed away peacefully on February 1, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was 92 years old, and his departure leaves a void in the hearts of many who had the privilege to know him.

A Life Well-Lived

Born on July 23, 1932, in Shreveport, Louisiana, Shelby spent much of his early life in Oklahoma City. His academic journey culminated at Classen High School, from which he graduated in 1950. Shelby moved on to attend the prestigious Southern Methodist University (SMU), graduating in 1954 from the SMU Cox School of Business as part of its first-ever real estate class.

A Family Man

Shelby found the love of his life in Adelaide Harrison Smith, and together they built a solid family foundation that included their beloved children and grandchildren. Shelby dedicated himself to his family businesses, playing an instrumental role in the Harrison Company and the C.W. Lane Company. As the longtime Chairman of the C.W. Lane Company, he excelled in a multitude of business ventures ranging from insurance and real estate development to hotel management and nursing homes. His hands touched many industries, including theaters and oil and gas, reflecting his versatile nature as a businessman.

Community Engagement

Beyond his professional achievements, Shelby was a pillar in the community. He served on the board of directors for both the First National Bank and Wheless Industries Inc. Additionally, his commitment to education was evident during his time as a board member for the SMU Board of Trustees from 1988 to 1992 and as a lifetime Trustee of the Noel Foundation. His charitable work did not stop there; he also served as the former Chairman of the United Methodist Foundation of Louisiana and co-chaired the local branch of the National Conference of Christians and Jews.

A Man of Many Interests

Shelby was not just about business and community service. He had a zest for life that was contagious. An active participant in numerous civic organizations, he was honored as the 36th King of the Cotillion and served as a past President of the Cotillion Club. As Captain of the Royal Order of The Jesters, he brought joy and laughter to many.

His passion for travel and history was evident in his love for Scottish heritage, and he proudly became a member of the Scottish Tartan Society. Summers and autumns were often spent at his serene home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he cherished every moment with family.

Remembering a Beloved Figure

Shelby was celebrated not just for his accomplishments in business and community service but also for the love he had for his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Adelaide, daughters, sons, and cherished grandchildren, all of whom will miss him dearly.

On February 6, 2025, the family will hold visitation from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Rose-Neath Funeral Home. A funeral service will take place the following day, February 7, 2025, at Noel United Methodist Church. Officiants for the service will include Reverend Max Zehner and Reverend Kaylan Walker, while private family burial is planned before the public service.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial contributions be made to Noel United Methodist Church or the United Methodist Foundation. As Shelby Lee Smith’s loved ones and the community mourn, they do so with gratitude for a life full of love, integrity, and dedication to family, business, and community.
