Exciting New Initiative Launches in Haughton: Little Free Pantry Opens Its Doors

Haughton, LA – September 7, 2024

On a lovely Saturday in Haughton, an inspiring new project is set to make a real difference in the community. The town has just announced the launch of a Little Free Pantry at Joe Delaney Park, providing vital food and essential items to residents who may be in need. This incredible initiative is the brainchild of Ethan Jeffus, who has been passionately working towards addressing food insecurity in Louisiana since 2022.

This project started with a vision of creating resources in communities across our state,” Jeffus shared with enthusiasm. From a young age, he realized the struggles many families face when it comes to securing proper food and resources, having volunteered with his mother at their local food pantry. His dedication to helping those in need has led to the establishment of 27 Little Free Pantries across Louisiana, serving locations from Baton Rouge and New Orleans to Ruston, Shreveport, Minden, and now, of course, Haughton.

So how did the idea of bringing this initiative to Haughton come about? Jeffus credits a successful partnership with Walmart in Minden, who generously sponsored five new pantries! “After we identified two great locations in Haughton—one between the Town Hall and library, and another at Joe Delaney Park—we were thrilled to set them up this past weekend,” he explained.

One of the pantries in Haughton is graciously sponsored by Walmart, while the other is backed by the Whitley brothers, Carson and Brock, who continue a family tradition of giving back to their community. Their mother, Stacey Adams, and grandmother, Sandra Walker, are proud of their efforts.

Food insecurity is a pressing issue in Louisiana, where the state ranks among the top five states with the highest levels of struggle in this area. The Little Free Pantry initiative strives to bridge that gap, ensuring that those in need have 24/7 access to vital resources.

“I believe if you want to see change in society, you have to be that change,” Jeffus said passionately. It’s clear that this project has hit a critical need in Haughton and surrounding areas, but it’s only possible because of the dedicated community leaders and supporters who help make it happen.

For Ethan, the journey has been deeply personal. “I’ve been blessed to never worry about where my next meal will come from, but I’ve witnessed family members and friends struggle with food insecurity,” he reflected. His years volunteering at food banks shed light on the magnitude of assistance required, and his drive to provide support only continues to grow.

As Haughton proudly welcomes its Little Free Pantry, the community is invited to join in and make a difference. Donating food and essential items is not just encouraged—it’s the lifeblood of the pantry! Anyone interested in contributing can find more information on how to help online.

This new venture serves as a hopeful reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can create a ripple effect in our communities. With each pantry stocked and each item shared, there’s a real sense of togetherness and care. Whether you stop by to fill up the pantry or take something for yourself, you be part of something so much greater.

In a world that can sometimes feel overwhelming, Haughton’s decision to implement the Little Free Pantry is a shining example of community spirit and compassion. Let’s keep the momentum going as we all focus on building a brighter future for our families, friends, and neighbors—together.
