Shreveport Aquarium

The Shreveport Aquarium is a public aquarium in Shreveport, Louisiana.
The aquarium is located near the Texas Street Bridge, next to the Red River. It houses 3,000 animals in seven galleries, including sharks, stingrays, eels, seahorses, alligators, paddlefish, snapping turtles, and more. It is open to the public all year, seven days a week. Hand-fed stingrays, touch tanks with rays, jelly, starfish, cleaner shrimp, sea cucumbers, and more In the area’s unique indoor mining sluice, look for gold, diamonds, and fossils. Summer camps, birthday parties, special holiday events, and private lessons are also available.

Exhibits

Visitors can access the galleries as they go from the entrance to the exit.

WOW Gallery – The first gallery visited has mostly reef fish such as blue tangs, parrotfish, unicorn fish, and angelfish. Shipwreck gallery including lionfish and other exhibits featuring clownfish, epaulet sharks, longnose hawkfish, and many other species. There is also a display of poison dart frogs.

Dome on the Bayou – The aquarium’s only freshwater themed gallery is based on Caddo Lake. The gallery, in collaboration with the Caddo Lake Institute, houses American paddlefish in an effort to keep the wild population steady, as well as sliders, an Alligator snapping turtle, Largemouth bass, and alligators. Louisiana’s unique indoor mining sluice is also hidden among the fauna in the dome. Customers can buy mine raw to run through the sluice to find gems and fossils.

Shore Explore – Visitors can interact with kelp crabs, bat stars, green anemones, purple sea urchins, and other species in a tidal pool themed after the Oregon Coast.

Cave gallery – Holds lantern fish, moray eels, and octopus.

Ocean Tunnel – The aquarium’s largest gallery is 30,000 gallons. More reef fish species, whitetip sharks, gray reef sharks, and a zebra shark, await guests as they pass through an acrylic tunnel.

Contact Cove – Visitors can interact with cownose rays and common stingrays, as well as have their hands washed by cleaner shrimp. The Submarine exhibit, which contains moon jellies to touch, a seahorse and pipefish nursery, sheep crabs,sea nettles, horn sharks, wolf eels, swell sharks, and much more to watch through a pop-up dome, is the final gallery. A high resolution microscope is also available for viewing a range of specimens.

The aquarium also has a huge indoor/outdoor event space with views of the Red River and the Texas Street Bridge, which is adjacent to Riverview Park.
