LSU gymnasts deliver an outstanding performance during the regional finals.
LSU gymnastics dazzled at the University Park Regional, scoring 198.1 and securing their spot in the regional finals. The Tigers excelled with standout performances from freshmen and All-Americans alike, despite the absence of star gymnast Livvy Dunne. As they prepare to face Arkansas again, the team’s focus and spirit shine bright, promising an exciting showdown ahead.
State College, Pennsylvania – The atmosphere was electric as LSU gymnastics took the stage at the University Park Regional, delivering a jaw-dropping performance that left fans buzzing. With an impressive score of 198.1, the Tigers not only clinched victory but also punched their ticket to the regional finals! The remarkable display put them well ahead of Arkansas, who finished in second place with a score of 197.55.
In what turned out to be an exhilarating competition, LSU started strong, briefly leading after the first rotation. While Arkansas made a valiant effort to close the gap after the second rotation, the Tigers shifted into high gear by the third rotation, extending their lead to over half a point and maintaining that advantage throughout the remainder of the meet. It was a delightful sight for the LSU fans present, who cheered their team on as they consistently outperformed expectations.
This performance marks LSU’s fourth consecutive meet scoring at least 198, an incredible feat that showcases their exceptional talent and team chemistry. Their stellar routine included a fantastic 49.55 on the floor exercise, significantly contributing to their overall score and ensuring a fifth consecutive entry into the 198 club.
This meet also served as a shining debut for freshman Kailin Chio, who showcased her remarkable skills with four scores of 9.9. Among her standout performances were 9.9s on vault, bars, and beam, plus a dazzling 9.925 on the floor. Her remarkable consistency helped her tie teammate Aleah Finnegan for the all-around title with a total score of 39.625.
Not to be outdone, Finnegan achieved 9.925 on the floor and an outstanding 9.95 on the beam, contributing significantly to the Tigers’ success. It’s worth noting that Arkansas was indeed the last team to take down LSU earlier in the season during a low-scoring meet back in January. With this latest victory, the stakes are high as they prepare to face Arkansas once again in the regional finals.
Adding a twist to the competition, LSU gymnastics star Livvy Dunne did not compete due to an avulsion fracture in her kneecap. However, her absence did not deter the rest of the Tigers, who performed with poise and determination, showcasing their well-deserved place in gymnastics glory.
Showcasing the strength of their roster, LSU boasted five All-Americans including Chio, Konnor McClain, Finnegan, Haleigh Bryant, and Amari Drayton. To add even more excitement, the team revealed their captivating “Crown Jewel” leotards adorned with a dazzling crown pattern and the phrase “Geaux Tigers” on the back. It’s truly a visual treat that further amps up the drama!
Focusing on the bigger picture, head coach Jay Clark emphasized the importance of maintaining the team’s mindset and goal of staying focused as they advance in the postseason. Successfully competing in Session II of the Regional, they began with the floor exercise, followed by vault, bars, and wrapping up on the beam — a sequence that proved successful for the team.
All eyes will be on LSU as they prepare for the regional finals this Saturday, where they will take on Arkansas, Michigan State, and Kentucky. With an explosive combination of talent, teamwork, and spirit, the Tigers are undoubtedly on a quest for glory in the upcoming competitions!
Fans can expect live coverage of the regional final available on ESPN+, ensuring that the excitement unfolds for everyone to witness. The anticipation is palpable as LSU gymnastics continues to chase their dreams of back-to-back NCAA Championships!
