In a lively announcement made on September 13, LSU Health Shreveport (LSUHS) revealed its ambitious plans to transform the former Sears property at Mall St. Vincent into a cutting-edge research facility aimed at tackling two significant health issues: cancer and cardiovascular diseases. The initiative reflects the institution’s ongoing growth in externally funded research, showing a commitment to enhancing healthcare and research capabilities in the community.
This innovative approach comes in response to a pressing need for more research space, as the current laboratory and office options at the Biomedical Research Institute and medical school are projected to reach full capacity within the next 18 to 24 months. Instead of constructing a brand-new building, the decision to lease back the existing property allows for a quicker transition into a modern, adaptable space. Plans indicate that the new facility will be ready for operation by late 2026 or early 2027, which is a fast turnaround!
At the heart of this project is the legacy of local brothers, Malcolm and Carroll Feist, whose generous bequests exceeding $100 million continue to support research at LSU Health Shreveport. The Feist-Weiller Cancer Center and the Center for Cardiovascular Diseases and Sciences are already recognized as Centers of Excellence, thanks in part to this funding. Malcolm’s focus was primarily on cardiovascular research, while Carroll directed his estate towards cancer research. Their contributions have laid a solid foundation for ongoing research endeavors at LSUHS.
The Sears building, with its wide-open spaces, is viewed as an ideal setup for modern research environments. The flexibility of the space means that it can be easily adapted to meet the changing needs of research while remaining cost-effective. More importantly, the location on the I-49 corridor increases visibility for LSU Health Shreveport, further elevating the institution’s profile.
This expansion project aims not just to provide much-needed research space but also offers a wealth of additional advantages:
To ensure the success of this exciting project, a fundraising campaign will be launched to gather financial backing. The foundation behind this effort, the LSU Health Sciences Foundation, is looking forward to engaging with the community in a meaningful way. The president of the foundation expressed optimism, noting that the foundation’s past community support made this acquisition possible. “We’re aiming high,” he said, emphasizing the collective goal of enhancing healthcare through research.
The plans for the new Cancer and Cardiovascular Research Facility come on the heels of the impending opening of the $79 million Center for Medical Education, showcasing a comprehensive commitment to fostering innovation and excellence in healthcare. As the region gears up for these significant advancements, it becomes clear that the future of LSU Health Shreveport is bright.
If you’re interested in supporting this noble cause, please reach out to the LSUHS Foundation. With a goal of elevating research and healthcare in our region, every little bit helps. This new chapter at LSU Health Shreveport is proof that great things are on the horizon, and it’s an exciting time for the community!
