Shreveport Students Celebrate Big Win on Match Day 2025

Shreveport, LA – Excitement was in the air as LSU Health Shreveport School of Medicine proudly hosted its annual Match Day celebration on Friday, March 21, 2025. This day marks a significant milestone for fourth-year medical students as they transition from their undergraduate studies to pursuing specialized training in residency programs.

Match Day is a much-anticipated event across the nation, where the National Resident Matching Program works its magic to determine where students will continue their medical education. For the Class of 2025 from LSU Health Shreveport, the day couldn’t have been more successful, as an impressive 96.1% of applicants matched with their desired residency programs.

Charting Paths in Medicine

This year, 44% of the students will be diving into primary care residencies, which includes disciplines like internal medicine, OB/GYN, pediatrics, family medicine, and combined medicine-pediatrics. Showing a commitment to serving their community, 22% of these students will remain at LSU Health Shreveport to continue their residency training.

In total, nearly half, or 46%, of the Class of 2025 will be staying in Louisiana for residency, with a whopping 76% of them opting to continue their training at an LSU medical facility. This is a big deal for a state projected to face a serious physician shortage, with Louisiana expected to have the third-worst physician shortage ratio in the country by 2030. If current trends continue, Louisiana could be looking at a troubling undersupply of 100 physicians for every 100,000 residents.

Impressive Match Rates

Over the last five years, LSU Health Shreveport has boasted an astounding 98.4% match rate. The students in the Class of 2025 have matched with some of the most competitive residency programs in the country, including prestigious hospitals and institutions like Stanford, University of Alabama-Birmingham, UT Southwestern, and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

Those who matched will begin their residency programs in July. They’ll be training at renowned facilities such as Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport – Academic Medical Center, St. Mary Medical Center, Monroe Medical Center, and Rapides Medical Center, among other partner hospitals. This not only highlights the strength of the LSU Health Shreveport program but also marks a hopeful future for healthcare within the community.

A Day of Celebration

As the students gathered to celebrate, the atmosphere was filled with joy, excitement, and pride. Families joined in to celebrate their loved ones’ achievements, creating unforgettable memories on this landmark day. Indeed, for many, this event is more than just a celebration of matching; it’s a celebration of dreams coming true and the beginning of a long journey in healthcare.

Looking Ahead

As the Class of 2025 prepares to receive their Doctor of Medicine degrees on May 10, 2025, the future looks bright for these aspiring medical professionals. Their hard work and dedication are about to pay off, and as they step into this new chapter in their lives, they are ready to take on the challenges of residency and make a lasting impact on their communities.

Congratulations to the students of LSU Health Shreveport School of Medicine for their remarkable achievements—here’s to a successful residency journey ahead!
