Shreveport Celebrates Match Day: 152 LSU Health Students Set for Residencies

Shreveport was buzzing with excitement on March 21, 2025, as LSU Health Shreveport School of Medicine hosted its annual Match Day. This day is always an important milestone for fourth-year medical students as they discover where they will begin their residency training. With a total of 152 eager students participating this year, it was a celebration filled with joy and anticipation!

A Milestone in Medicine

Match Day is not just any event; it signifies a major transition from the world of undergraduate medical education to graduate training. As students excitedly opened their match envelopes, a sense of pride and accomplishment filled the air. LSU Health Shreveport had an impressive match rate of 96.1% through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), reflecting the hard work and dedication of these future doctors.

Staying Local: A Commitment to Louisiana

Among the graduating class, a significant 46% decided to stay in Louisiana for their residency. This is not just a trend; it’s a crucial decision, given Louisiana’s forecasted physician shortfall. By 2030, the state is projected to be facing the third worst physician shortage ratio in the country—not an ideal situation for healthcare! Thus, students’ choice to remain close to home is a commitment to improving local healthcare.

Out of those students choosing to stay in Louisiana, around 76% will be training at an LSU medical school. With strong roots in the community, these future healthcare providers will be making an invaluable impact on their home state’s healthcare system.

Residency Options Galore

This year was not just about staying in the state; the LSU Health Shreveport students were also matched with highly competitive residency programs across the nation. Notable institutions like Stanford, University of Alabama-Birmingham, UT Southwestern, and Baylor welcomed some of these talented graduates into their programs. In total, 22% of the students chose to remain at LSU Health Shreveport for their residency, ensuring they will continue to contribute to their home institution’s legacy.

Primary Care Focus

Reflecting the growing concern for healthcare access, a substantial 44% of the Class of 2025 will be entering primary care residencies. These areas include internal medicine, OB/GYN, pediatrics, family medicine, and medicine-pediatrics. With a focus on primary care, these young doctors are set to tackle many of the fundamental healthcare needs of the community.

Looking Ahead

The excitement doesn’t stop at Match Day! The eager new residents will start their training in July, receiving hands-on experience at various medical facilities, including Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport – Academic Medical Center, St. Mary Medical Center, and Monroe Medical Center. This upcoming chapter promises to offer vital training in a supportive environment.

As graduation approaches, the Class of 2025 will officially receive their Doctor of Medicine degrees on May 10, 2025. It’s a day filled with celebration and the culmination of years of rigorous study and hard work.

A Bright Future for Louisiana Healthcare

The retention of residents in Louisiana is critical, as the state grapples with its impending physician shortage. With LSU Health Shreveport successfully filling all 138 residency positions available, the future shines a little brighter for healthcare in Louisiana. As these new doctors embark on their professional journeys, they carry with them a passion for healing and a dedication to serve their community.

In the spirit of continuing education and community service, LSU Health Shreveport’s Chancellor and Dean recognized the invaluable support from the faculty, guiding students every step of the way. Together, they look forward to the day when these doctors will step into their roles, transforming healthcare in Louisiana, one patient at a time.
