Money Smart Week at Shreve Memorial Library
SHREVEPORT, La. – Shreve Memorial Library branches are teaching patrons about financial literacy through Sunday during Money Smart Week. Library patrons of all ages are encouraged to visit the library for fun and engaging ways to learn more about budgeting, banking, saving, handling finances, and making smart financial decisions.
Money Smart Week Programs
Money Smart Week programs include special guest presentations and workshops, financial literacy classes and discussions, and interactive games and activities. All programs are free and open to the public.
The library will host a series of workshops led by Red River Bank on fraud prevention and identity theft. Losing money to scams and fraud can be devastating, both financially and emotionally. Judy Madison, vice president of community outreach and mortgage lender at Red River Brank, will present informational programs on how to identify, report and avoid scams, fraud and identity theft. The workshops, entitled “Red River University: How to Identify and Avoid Scams, Identity Theft and Fraud,” will take place at various branches.
- Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Hollywood/Union Avenue Branch, 2105 Hollywood Avenue
- Thursday at 2 p.m. at the David Raines Branch, 2855 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive
- Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the Cedar Grove-Line Avenue Branch, 8303 Line Avenue
Representatives from Barksdale Federal Credit Union (BFCU) will visit the North Shreveport Branch to provide programs for adults and children. The programs will cover the basics of banking, including checking and savings accounts, credit scores, and loans for adults. Both programs will take place at the North Shreveport Branch, located at 4844 North Market Street.
Financial Literacy For Adults
Adults can also learn more about financial literacy, budgeting, saving, and wealth creation at several library programs throughout the week:
- Wednesday at 10 a.m. – LPL Financial Assistant Julie O’Glee will visit the Hamilton/South Caddo Branch
- Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. – Budgeting, saving, and wealth at the Mooretown Branch, 4360 Hollywood Avenue
- Thursday at 10 a.m. – Creating a monthly personal budget using Excel at the Broadmoor Branch, 1212 Captain Shreve Drive
Financial Literacy For Teens
Teens are invited to get a head start on their financial journeys with Money Smart Week programs for teens:
- Wednesday at 5 p.m. – The importance of being financially responsible at the Atkins Branch
- Wednesday at 5 p.m. – The importance of saving by making piggy banks and coin banks at the West Shreveport Branch
Financial Literacy For Children and Teens
Children and teens will learn financial literacy through game play with games such as Monopoly, Life, Pay Day and more. Board games teach children concepts of budgeting, managing financial risk, buying and selling, and making smart financial decisions.
