Celebrating National First Responders Day in Shreveport, Louisiana

Shreveport, La. – Today, we take a moment to reflect on the bravery and selflessness of those who rush to the aid of others in times of crisis—our first responders. National First Responders Day is more than just a calendar event; it’s a heartfelt tribute to the unsung heroes in our communities who dedicate their lives to helping others.

The Calling to Serve

First responders, whether they are police officers, firefighters, or emergency medical personnel, are the backbone of our safety. Among them is Bossier City Police Officer Lisa Roberts, who feels she was truly called to this profession. “I always wanted to help people because I grew up in the foster care system, and you see a lot of negative,” Roberts shared. Her journey into law enforcement began with a desire to turn those experiences into something positive.

“Once I joined the security forces, I really got to see the impact that law enforcement can have specifically on the communities. You know, you’re there for someone on their darkest days, and just to help them work through that process is honestly, like the most rewarding,” said Roberts with pride.

The Emotional Toll

The nature of first responders’ jobs means they often face traumatic and difficult situations. The calls they answer can evoke a range of emotions, from urgency to deep sadness. Yet, even in the face of these challenges, motivation runs high. Shreveport firefighter Calvin Baker emphasized this sentiment, saying, “What motivates us every day to keep going is like when the community recognizes first responders’ day. It lets us know that we are appreciated.”

Baker continued, “Every time we get on the truck, every time we put our lives on the line to help save and protect the community, we look forward to it; we sign up for it.” His passion for serving the public is evident in his words as he encourages his fellow first responders to remain resilient.

Words of Encouragement

Roberts also shares some advice for those who may consider joining the ranks of first responders in the future. “I always say it’s an awesome job. If you truly are interested, go ahead and shoot for the stars. I mean, I love it. It truly is one of the most rewarding jobs that I can think of,” she advised.

Whether it’s police work or firefighting, the sense of fulfillment that comes from serving the community is unmatched. Baker emphasized the camaraderie among first responders, saying, “Keep up the fight. I say thank you for your oath. It’s an honor to be a first responder. I know the challenges that you’re going through. Together we are a team. Together we can do more, and together we can be that stronger force saving lives right here in the communities.”

A Call for Community Support

As these brave men and women put their lives on the line every day, their hope is for the community to appreciate and support them. National First Responders Day serves as a reminder of the sacrifices they make and the dangers they willingly face to ensure our safety.

The Bossier City Police Department is actually hiring and they welcome anyone interested in joining their ranks. After all, every day brings new opportunities to help those in need, and who knows? You might find your calling in serving your community just like Officer Roberts did.

Conclusion

As we celebrate National First Responders Day, let us remember to show our gratitude to these incredible individuals. They are not just first responders; they are our neighbors, our friends, and our everyday heroes. Thank you for the sacrifices you make and the lives you touch in our communities!
