New Students Enrolled at Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts

Natchitoches, LA – A total of 132 students were officially welcomed into the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts (LSMSA) during a poignant ceremony held on Friday, August 30. This event marked the 42nd annual Matriculation Ceremony, which took place at A.A. Fredericks Auditorium on the campus of Northwestern State University.

This new cohort represents 58% of the state’s parishes, with students hailing from numerous areas across Louisiana. After a rigorous selection process, which saw over 200 applicants vying for a spot, 140 students were invited to join this prestigious, tuition-free, state-funded residential school dedicated to high-achieving and academically focused individuals.

New Academic Year Begins

The 2024-2025 school year at LSMSA commenced on Wednesday, August 21. Among the new students, there are 77 sophomores, 50 juniors, and five seniors. This diverse group of learners is expected to contribute significantly to the school’s vibrant academic environment.

Words of Welcome

Dr. Steve Horton, the Executive Director of LSMSA, addressed the new students and their families, emphasizing the importance of talent and hard work. “I hope that you’re becoming aware of what happens when you flex your talents and abilities, when you expand your capacity to study, work, and learn,” he remarked. Dr. Horton encouraged the students, saying, “I hope that you already sense what it can mean for you to soar with the eagles.”

Keynote Speech Encourages Resilience

The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Allison Landry, LSMSA’s Principal Lecturer of Biology, who focused on the theme of resilience. She encouraged the new students to support one another while navigating the challenges they may face. “Resilience means rebounding from setbacks and struggles, putting one foot in front of the other and moving forward,” Dr. Landry stated, underlining the importance of camaraderie.

Cultural Highlights of the Ceremony

The ceremony featured a musical performance by the LSMSA Mixed Ensemble, conducted by Instructor of Instrumentals, Theory, and Composition, Michael Young. The students showcased their talents with the National Anthem being sung by Sophie Lee, a member of the Class of 2026 from Bossier Parish. The ceremony concluded with the singing of the LSMSA alma mater by Elizabeth Porche, also a Class of 2026 student, hailing from Ascension Parish.

A Reflection from the Senior Class

Amidst the inspiring speeches and performances, the Senior Class President, Blaise Albarez from St. Tammany Parish, delivered a reflection on the experiences of the past years and offered encouragement to the incoming class. This moment highlighted the school’s community spirit and the bonds formed over shared academic pursuits.

Looking Ahead

As LSMSA looks ahead to the new academic year, there is a clear sense of excitement among both new and returning students. The school’s commitment to fostering academic excellence and personal growth through various programs and the support of dedicated staff remains unwavering, setting a strong foundation for the future.
