Discover the Past at Pioneer Day in Shreveport

Shreveport, La. — Mark your calendars because an exciting event is just around the corner! On October 12, the LSUS Pioneer Heritage Center will host its 27th annual Pioneer Day, running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This vibrant celebration invites you to take a delightful leap back in time to experience what life was like in Northwest Louisiana during the mid-to-late 1800s!

Imagine the warmth of a crackling fire as you witness Marty Young, the center’s director, fire up his blacksmith forge. At just 52 years old, Young is one of the younger participants among the approximately 70 living historians and enthusiastic volunteers eager to share their knowledge of the past with you. “One of our main goals with this event is to expose people to the Pioneer Heritage Center, but we also want to spark an interest in one of the activities being demonstrated,” Young explains passionately. He believes inspiring the next generation to appreciate and preserve the rich traditions and crafts of yesteryear is paramount.

What’s Happening at Pioneer Day?

For families, history buffs, or anyone just looking for a fun day out, Pioneer Day promises a packed schedule of hands-on activities and demonstrations. The Heritage Center features seven historic buildings, including the charming Caspiana House, a dogtrot log cabin, a general store, and even a doctor’s office—all brimming with artifacts that depict daily life from the 19th century.

During Pioneer Day, guests will discover firsthand what life was like for those who came before us. You’ll see live demonstrations of essential skills and crafts like woodcarving, leatherworking, pine needle basket weaving, Dutch oven cooking, and much more! You can even catch Elvin Shields, a local artist from Melrose Plantation, creating twisted wire toys that have cultural roots tracing back to Africa. How fascinating is that?

Get Involved In Learning

Not only will you enjoy the demonstrations, but local organizations will also provide engaging presentations. From the Scottish Society of the Louisiana Highlands to the Bossier Parish Libraries History Center, there will be talks on everything from Caddo Native American tools to the unique flora and fauna found in the area. It’s a perfect opportunity for those looking to enrich their knowledge.

Support Local Artisans

While you’re soaking up the atmosphere of Pioneer Day, why not take a stroll through the vendors’ area? Here, you can browse and purchase beautiful crafts directly from local artisans. Due to rising costs of materials like wood and cloth, these sales are crucial for keeping these traditional arts alive. Not only can you find unique handmade items, but your support will help ensure that these skills aren’t lost to time.

And here’s the best part: entry is free for students of all ages, while adults pay just $5. For such an incredible opportunity to learn and connect with history, it’s a small price to pay!

Join Us for a Memorable Experience!

Pioneer Day is not just an event; it’s a chance to engage with our rich heritage and have fun with family and friends. Whether you are young or young at heart, come experience the crafts, stories, and the spirit of the past with us. We can’t wait to see you there and share the warmth of our local history with everyone!
