News Summary

Severe thunderstorms and EF-1 tornadoes have caused significant chaos in the ArkLaTex area, particularly in Shreveport and Blanchard, Louisiana. With widespread damage reported, residents faced power outages and safety warnings from the National Weather Service. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, but the storm has left many on edge as further severe weather may develop. Utility crews are working to restore power to thousands affected by the storm.

Severe Thunderstorms and Tornadoes Rock the ArkLaTex Region!

Shreveport, Louisiana, has been the center of a stormy showdown as severe thunderstorms and tornadoes swept through the ArkLaTex area, causing a whirlwind of chaos, damage, and power outages. The National Weather Service (NWS) didn’t pull any punches, issuing a severe weather statement just after 9 a.m. on Tuesday morning, warning residents to be prepared for what was coming.

What’s Happening?

As the day unfolded, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was spotted hanging over Blanchard, Louisiana, which is about eight miles northwest of Shreveport. This wasn’t just your run-of-the-mill rainstorm; it had the potential to whip up flying debris, wreak havoc on mobile homes, roofs, windows, and even vehicles!

Residents in Shreveport, Bossier City, and Blanchard were given the green light to find safety. The NWS advised people to head to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, far away from windows. A tornado warning was issued for west-central Caddo Parish, valid until 9:30 a.m. The day was definitely going to get a lot more exciting—or frightening!

The Aftermath – Tornadoes Confirmed!

A damage survey team has confirmed that two EF-1 tornadoes left their mark in Northern Caddo Parish. The devastation didn’t stop there: reports came in detailing downed utility lines, fallen trees, and even a few traffic mishaps. In Blanchard, a lady found herself in a narrow escape when a tree lumbered right into her living room while she was sitting calmly. Luckily, no injuries were reported. Just a little too close for comfort!

Jacqueline Blakes, the homeowner, made a last-minute decision to move into her bathroom right before the tree crashed down. Luck was on her side as her husband’s car was also the victim of a fallen tree, but thankfully, he got away unscathed.

Widespread Damage Reports

Damage waves rippled across Minden, Louisiana, where roofs were blown off homes and reports came in from DeKalb, Texas, and even New Boston, Texas, detailing damaged structures. Unfortunately, Camp County, Texas, experienced injuries and overturned trailers, particularly affecting an RV park in the Barefoot Bay Marina area. It’s fair to say this storm had everyone on edge!

Power Outages and Restoration

As if that wasn’t enough, the storm brought strong winds that pulled the power plug on approximately 29,000 customers at its peak. By 12:30 p.m., around 22,000 customers were still in the dark, with numbers dwindling to about 12,902 by 2:30 p.m. The areas feeling the brunt of these power outages included Caddo, Natchitoches, Sabine, and Vernon parishes in Louisiana, along with Bowie, Gregg, and Franklin counties in Texas.

While utility crews were scrambling to restore power, SWEPCO couldn’t provide estimated restoration times for many affected areas, leaving plenty of families in a bind.

What Lies Ahead?

The threat wasn’t over yet! A tornado warning was also issued for south Bossier Parish until 10 a.m., tracking a tornado-producing storm that was moving rapidly east at a brisk 50 mph. To make matters even more fun (or scary), a severe thunderstorm warning was extended until 10:15 a.m., with wind gusts clocking in at a whopping 60 mph!

As the day progressed, the ArkLaTex region braced for the possibility of showers and thunderstorms developing again between noon and 3 p.m. with a strong 100% chance of rain. Residents in Minden, Louisiana, should also be prepared for a city-wide power outage later in the day due to damage sustained on a main power line, predicted to last about an hour.

For the folks in the ArkLaTex, it’s been a wild ride through stormy weather. Here’s hoping everyone stays safe and sound as the clouds begin to clear!
