Significant Changes Taking Shape as Sheriff Whitehorn Celebrates First 100 Days in Shreveport

Shreveport, LA – It’s hard to believe that it has already been 100 days since Sheriff Henry Whitehorn took office in Caddo Parish! As he reflects on this important milestone, it’s clear that he has been hard at work laying the groundwork for a safer and more connected community. With a strong focus on trust, transparency, and public safety, Whitehorn has implemented several initiatives that are designed to enhance the relationship between the citizens and law enforcement.

Building Bridges with the Community

Since stepping into his role, Sheriff Whitehorn has prioritized collaborating with local police chiefs, federal law enforcement partners, and, importantly, the Shreveport Police Department. These partnerships have allowed for the development of efficient strategies to combat rising violent crime rates and have increased patrols throughout the city. Whitehorn is proud of these efforts, stating, “Together, we are laying the foundation for a safer and stronger future.”

One of the most noteworthy initiatives launched in the past 100 days is the establishment of a Community Relations/Crime Prevention Unit. This dedicated team has been instrumental in creating youth programs focused on crime prevention. Understanding the importance of community engagement, Whitehorn and his team have also actively met with various local organizations to discuss concerns and build lasting relationships.

Emphasizing Safety in Schools

In a significant move towards ensuring the safety of students, Sheriff Whitehorn has successfully placed trained School Resource Officers (SROs) in every high school across the parish. This initiative stands as a testament to Whitehorn’s commitment to providing a secure environment for our local youth. “Having these officers on campus is a vital step toward ensuring the safety of our students,” he remarked.

Enhancing Crime Prevention Efforts

The efforts to bolster crime enforcement have yielded concrete results. The Sheriff’s Office recently conducted a joint enforcement detail with local and state law enforcement agencies. This operation alone resulted in a remarkable 78 traffic stops and 55 citations! Those numbers signal a proactive approach to keeping our streets safer.

Additionally, the department’s Drone Unit has made significant strides with 40 callouts, aiding in searches and activities that contributed to 10 arrests. The success of these operations has only reinforced the commitment to public safety.

Community Engagement Initiatives

Sheriff Whitehorn believes that community engagement is essential for effective policing. Participation in events like National Night Out encourages residents to stand together against crime by hosting block parties and various crime prevention activities. The office has also introduced various programs, including a youth firearms safety camp and a Misdemeanor Warrant Resolution event, demonstrating a commitment to community education and involvement.

Support for Rehabilitation and Job Training

Recognizing that rehabilitation is key to reducing recidivism, the Sheriff’s Office has implemented programs aimed at giving inmates meaningful opportunities to change their lives. Over 270 inmates have successfully completed substance abuse programs, while others took part in vocational courses in carpentry and fiber optics installation. Furthermore, inmates learned vital life-saving skills such as CPR, providing a foundation for their successful reintegration into society.

Exciting Developments Ahead

Looking to the future, Sheriff Whitehorn is excited to announce the upcoming launch of a Transitional Work Release Program scheduled for November 2024, as well as an Explorer Program for youth set to begin in January 2025. Both initiatives will offer local residents a peek into careers in law enforcement and help young people develop valuable job skills.

Innovations to Ensure Fiscal Responsibility

In addition to community and safety priorities, the Sheriff’s Office has introduced strategic measures to improve operational efficiency and responsibly manage finances. A new website with a crime mapping feature has been launched, providing residents with real-time updates on crime within their neighborhoods through an innovative app.

As Sheriff Whitehorn continues to lead with enthusiasm and a clear mission, he remains firmly focused on serving the citizens of Caddo Parish with respect, trust, and professional law enforcement services. The dedication displayed in these first 100 days signals a bright future for community safety and engagement in Shreveport.
