Shreveport, Louisiana, was abuzz with excitement on a spectacularly sunny fall morning on September 27, as city dignitaries and enthusiastic locals gathered to welcome the brand-new Amazon fulfillment center. It was a day filled with music, celebration, and a peek behind the scenes at a massive facility that’s now part of our community.
As visitors made their way into the 2.5 million-square-foot center, they were treated to a lively performance by the Caddo Heights Elementary School’s marching band, filling the air with delightful tunes. It’s not every day that you get an inside look at a giant facility like this, and everyone seemed thrilled to see what goes on behind closed doors.
Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux was on hand to express his enthusiasm for this cutting-edge facility, exclaiming, “This is big, big, big stuff!” His words echoed the sentiment of many in attendance, who were eager to embrace the opportunities this center brings for the city and its residents.
Named SHV1—after the nearby Shreveport Regional Airport—this fulfillment center is one of just two state-of-the-art robotics facilities Amazon operates in Louisiana. With over 1,000 full-time employees, SHV1 is poised to play a crucial role in the Amazon supply chain, serving as the “first mile” destination for countless packages.
Safety is a top priority for Amazon, and Shreveport’s fulfillment center embraces advanced automation to prioritize the well-being of its workforce. General Manager Abhishek Gowrishankar emphasized how the robots are there to assist human workers. He explained, “A lot of things that the robots do… is to assist humans. So that the humans are able to take care of actions and movements in their ergonomic areas.”
By reducing the need for heavy lifting or extensive walking, the robotic systems make the work environment safer and more efficient. This innovative approach helps create a workplace that not only supports productivity but also deeply cares about its employees’ health and safety.
At SHV1, employees and cutting-edge technology work hand-in-hand to sort and package items that are then sent off to the next stops in the Amazon supply chain—known as the “middle mile” centers. According to Gowrishankar, during its operational phase, SHV1 aims to ship a staggering number of packages—several million units each week. That’s no small feat!
In addition to being a hub for operations, SHV1 is dedicated to giving back to its local community. In a heartfelt gesture during the opening celebration, Amazon presented two $25,000 checks to Caddo Parish Schools and the Every Warrior Network. Gowrishankar shared, “One of the things that we are very focused on is how do we give back to this community who is supporting us so much.” This commitment to community involvement is a welcome aspect of Amazon’s presence in Shreveport.
Over the past 14 years, Amazon’s investment in Louisiana has exceeded an impressive $3 billion through infrastructure and employee compensation. This has in turn contributed an astounding $2.9 billion to Louisiana’s GDP, signaling the significant impact the company has had on the local economy.
As Shreveport embraces this new chapter with the opening of the Amazon fulfillment center, the excitement in the air is palpable. With a focus on innovation, safety, and community engagement, SHV1 stands as a testament to what can happen when a global company partners with a local community.
As we look forward, it is clear that this new facility will not only create jobs and benefits but will also foster a stronger relationship between Amazon and the wonderful Shreveport community.
