Shreveport-Bossier Launches Innovative Program to Combat Food Insecurity Among Military Families

Shreveport-Bossier, LA – In an inspiring move designed to lift spirits and bellies, the Shreveport-Bossier Military Affairs Council (MAC) has proudly announced the launch of a heartwarming initiative known as the Currency of Caring Program. Starting on November 12, 2024, this exciting program will be making strides to tackle an important issue: food insecurity among junior enlisted airmen and their families stationed at Barksdale Air Force Base (BAFB).

Meals with Dignity: A New Leaf for Military Families

The Currency of Caring Program is all about ensuring that those who serve our country don’t have to worry where their next meal is coming from. Participants in this noble effort will receive meal tokens that can be redeemed at select local eateries, including the beloved Jacquelyn’s Café, Rhino Coffee, and Marilynn’s Place. Each token will offer a complete meal—an entrée, side, and drink—served with respect and kindness, and most importantly, no questions asked.

This initiative isn’t just a local feel-good effort; it addresses a critical concern that’s affecting military personnel on a national scale. According to a recent study conducted by the Pentagon, a staggering 25.8% of U.S. military members face challenges accessing nutritious food. Alarmingly, 15.4% of those who experience food insecurity are active-duty service members.

Spreading the Word of Support

“The MAC is excited to introduce this program to support our airmen and their families,” commented Trey Giglio, President & CEO of the Shreveport-Bossier Military Affairs Council. He added that the Currency of Caring initiative not only fills the bellies of service members but also strengthens the bond between our military and the local community.

This program is a win-win situation for everyone involved. Local restaurants get a chance to showcase their delicious offerings while also stepping up to provide crucial support to military families in need. It helps to reduce the stigma that often surrounds seeking assistance, creating a healthier, more connected community environment that fosters mental well-being amongst service members. “We thank the local restaurants for their commitment and encourage more to join,” said Robert Tibi, Executive Director of MAC. The call to action doesn’t stop there; community members are also invited to participate through monetary donations or volunteer efforts, making it easier for local military families to feel supported.
