A Shreveport Native
Born on May 23, 1941, in Shreveport, Ronnie was a lifelong resident who poured his heart into the community. He graduated from C.E. Byrd High School in 1959 and went on to attend Texas A&M University. However, life took a sudden turn in 1961 when he stepped up to take the reins of his father’s business, Free’s Commercial Refrigeration, after his father’s unexpected passing. Ronnie faithfully ran the family company for an impressive 63 years on Samford Avenue, earning a reputation as an industry leader.
Innovator and Mentor
Beyond his hard work and dedication, Ronnie was admired for his innovative, “can-do” spirit. During the 1980s, he developed Free’s Directed Airflow, a revolutionary ventilation system that found its way into manufacturing facilities around the globe. His creativity and vision not only changed industries but also inspired many of his peers. As a patient teacher and mentor, Ronnie dedicated himself to uplifting those around him.
Family First
Family truly mattered to Ronnie, perhaps most of all. He met his loving wife, Margaret Sue Attaway, while working on a power plant for SWEPCO, and the pair shared a beautiful marriage spanning 61 years. Together, they raised two daughters, Ronda and Stacey, and the family enjoyed countless happy moments, especially on family boating excursions. Ronnie embraced his role as Papa to his five grandchildren, sharing his passion for water skiing and making unforgettable memories.
A Life of Service
Ronnie’s commitment to faith and service extended far beyond his family. As a proud member of Broadmoor United Methodist Church, which he joined in 1964, he played a significant role in chartering the Cornerstone Sunday School Class. His faith guided every aspect of his life and work, as he dedicated Free’s Incorporated to God in 1986 and engaged in fervent evangelism efforts. Ronnie was passionate about sharing the Good News of Jesus, frequently connecting with friends and customers through heartfelt messages and daily prayer.
Leading in Community and Industry
Ronnie’s leadership was felt not just at home but across various organizations too. He served as President of the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (Shreveport chapter), President of the Mechanical Contractors Association, and President of Goodwill Industries in Shreveport, showcasing his commitment to making positive contributions to both community and industry.
A Grateful Family
Survived by his beloved wife Margaret, daughters Ronda Trawick and Stacey Hargon, five grandchildren, and a supportive brother, Ronnie’s legacy is sure to live on through those he touched. He is preceded in death by his parents and his son-in-law. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Richard Michael, Bristol Hospice, and all the caregivers for their compassionate care during Ronnie’s final months.
Farewell to a Pioneer
As the Shreveport community says goodbye to a shining star, Ronnie’s memory will be cherished by all who knew him. From his innovative spirit to his steadfast commitment to his family and faith, he leaves behind a legacy that will inspire future generations.
