Shreveport Celebrates 30 Years of Community Renewal
SHREVEPORT, La. – It’s a sunny day in Shreveport, perfect for celebrating a big milestone. Community Renewal International (CRI) is marking its 30th anniversary, and what better way to honor three decades of dedication to revitalizing neighborhoods than with a heartfelt banquet that brings together community members and leaders alike?
A Vision that Goes Beyond Borders
During the festivities, guests gathered to reflect on the amazing work CRI has accomplished over the years. This non-profit organization, founded with the goal of lifting up impoverished neighborhoods in Shreveport-Bossier, has made a significant impact not just locally, but on a global scale. They’ve worked tirelessly to reduce crime and improve lives in targeted areas by establishing “Friendship Houses” and “Haven homes,” alongside providing vital after-school programs for teens.
One of the highlights of the evening was a speech delivered by none other than the Mexican Ambassador to the United States, Esteban Moctezuma Barragan. He shared his admiration for CRI’s efforts, stating, “In Shreveport, we found there are many social efforts by Community Renewal International that I wanted to witness to see how they create healthy social tissue in the community.” His words resonated with many, emphasizing the importance of creating partnerships to foster economic and community development.
Uniting the Community
Shreveport’s Mayor, Tom Arceneaux, couldn’t agree more. He took the opportunity to express his gratitude, saying, “Community Renewal has been an anchor to many neighborhoods in our community. They have grown and made constant contributions to the well-being of our city while bringing us together in unity. It’s wonderful to celebrate their 30th anniversary.” These words beautifully captured the essence of CRI’s mission – to bring people together, support one another, and rebuild neighborhoods from the ground up.
Building Foundations for the Future
As CRI has established relationships within the community, they’ve focused on understanding the specific needs of vulnerable neighborhoods. By reconnecting residents with faith groups, businesses, and passion-driven activists, they’ve identified unique ways to spur growth and transformation. Valentin Miafo, the International Relationships Director, highlighted how the international partnerships CRI has formed improve social issues in various countries: “It has helped transform my community in Cameroon, South Africa, and it can transform communities around the world.”
The ambassador also took time to share his extensive experience as the former Mexican Secretary of Education, engaging with local school principals from We Care Care Schools. His discussions were intended to foster collaboration in education and community initiatives, recognizing that every small step towards improvement has a ripple effect.
