Shreveport, Louisiana – The Caddo Parish School Board convened on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at the Caddo Parish Public Schools Central Office to discuss important revisions to the district’s discipline policy.
The primary focus of the meeting was a set of proposed changes to the discipline policy, mandated by a recently enacted state law in Louisiana. This new law requires all school districts to update their policy guidelines regarding student safety and behavioral conduct.
One significant revision aims to explicitly prohibit any actions involving the taping or threatening to tape a student’s mouth shut, as well as restricting their airway, regardless of parental consent. This change comes in light of a troubling incident that occurred in April 2022 in Lacombe, Louisiana, where a pastor was accused of mistreating three 13-year-old students by taping their mouths at Lakeside Christian Academy.
The incident raised concerns among educators and parents alike, resulting in calls for a more robust policy that prioritizes student welfare. Additionally, the board previously revised its cell phone policy in July 2023, which was quickly adopted across all K-12 schools in the state of Louisiana. These ongoing updates reflect a commitment to maintaining a safe and nurturing educational environment for all students.
During the meeting, members of the school board reviewed the proposed changes and engaged in discussions to gain further insight into their implications. The CPSB has already made adjustments to their policy guidelines; however, they will take an official vote on the latest revisions at their next board meeting scheduled for Tuesday.
The revisions to the discipline policy are crucial as they set clear boundaries for acceptable behavior and reinforce the district’s commitment to student safety. By clearly defining actions that are prohibited, the school board aims to deter misconduct and protect students from potential harm in school settings.
Given the serious nature of the revisions, attendees at the meeting included school officials, administrators, and concerned community members, all of whom emphasized the importance of ensuring a safe learning environment.
Community members who wish to provide feedback on the proposed changes are encouraged to reach out through designated channels. Interested parties can contact the board via email with their comments and suggestions as the CPSB continues to consider these critical updates.
The next meeting will be an essential opportunity for the school board to finalize these changes and address any remaining concerns from parents and educators alike.
