Sponsor Our ArticlesIn a grave case reflecting the fentanyl crisis, three individuals from Shreveport were sentenced for their involvement in drug trafficking that resulted in a fatal overdose. Martin William Thompson received a 20-year sentence, while Rachel Ann Hassell and Courtney Renee Cox were sentenced to over a decade in prison. Their actions contributed to a tragic death and highlight the urgent need to combat the opioid epidemic.
In a heart-wrenching case that highlights the dangerous grip of fentanyl in our communities, a man and two women from Shreveport are facing severe consequences for their roles in a drug trafficking conspiracy linked to a tragic overdose. The saga unfolded in a courtroom where U.S. District Judge Elizabeth E. Foote meted out justice, sending a clear message about the serious implications of drug-related crimes.
The key players in this unsettling story include Martin William Thompson, aged 53, along with Rachel Ann Hassell, 47, and Courtney Renee Cox, 41. Thompson has been handed a hefty 20-year sentence (240 months) behind bars, while both Hassell and Cox will spend 10 years and 1 month (121 months) in prison. Their actions have not only affected their lives but have also led to the untimely death of a local man, echoing the alarming consequences of fentanyl trafficking.
The story began to unfold back in 2021 when local law enforcement started receiving reports about the alarming rise of fentanyl and other illegal substances in the Shreveport area. A joint investigation by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office uncovered a web of drug activity that led to these individuals.
On July 24, 2021, a routine traffic stop on Jewella Avenue took a dangerous turn when authorities discovered a stash of drugs. Officers found an astonishing 1.5 kilograms of methamphetamine, 1.1 kilograms of fentanyl in brick form, and an eye-popping over 5,000 fentanyl pills. These drugs, purchased in El Paso, were intended for Thompson, setting the stage for the impending tragedy.
Tragically, the investigation also linked the trio to the death of a 29-year-old driver from Greenwood, Louisiana who succumbed to a fentanyl overdose on May 29, 2021. It became clear that the deceased had obtained the deadly drug from Cox, who was in direct contact with Thompson. In a chilling turn of events, Cox admitted to supplying the fatal dose and reported that Thompson had cautioned her about the pills’ potency, effectively underlining the ever-present danger associated with such drugs.
The saga didn’t end there. In September 2021, authorities arrested Hassell for possessing 50.864 grams of heroin, linking her back to the larger conspiracy. Text messages exchanged between Hassell and Thompson revealed ongoing negotiations and discussions concerning fentanyl deliveries, painting a picture of a well-established operation aimed at distributing these dangerous substances.
Ultimately, Thompson and Cox pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges, while Hassell faced charges related to conspiracy to distribute fentanyl, possession, and maintaining a location for drug-related activities. This case sets a significant legal precedent, marking the first conviction in the Western District of Louisiana for fentanyl distribution resulting in death.
U.S. Attorney Brandon B. Brown emphasized the alarming nature of fentanyl and the government’s unwavering commitment to dismantling drug trafficking operations. As the community grapples with the aftermath of this case, there is a greater conversation to be had about combating the opioid crisis that is affecting so many lives.
As Shreveport faces the weight of this tragedy, it serves as a harsh reminder that the dangers lurking in our neighborhoods are all too real. Hopefully, the lessons learned from this case can help steer others away from the dark path of drug trafficking and the devastation it brings to families and communities.
